You know, I wonder if the excessive wear has to do with the amount of siping on some of the side knobs. Starting to notice a bit of wear on mine, mainly on the side knobs with the long central sipe, although it still has life left. I wonder if the amount of siping causes more squirm of/or force onto the base of the knob causing the undercutting.
After mine bites the dust I think I'll put a dissector on.

The point of sipes on a tire knob is to generate more mechanical friction with the ground, with the goal of creating more traction and transmitting greater forces between the ground and the knob.
I think your beam example assumes that forces being applied through the knob are held constant, and so the beam that flexes at one end will apply less stress to the rigid connection compared to a beam that's inflexible (or much less flexible) at both ends.

manufacturing defect would be my first guess as to why some have very different wear than others. bad batch of rubber compound?
Sounds like he and I are riding in the same conditions - the PNW isn't known to be hard on tires. If we're experiencing undercutting that quickly I doubt it's just a "bad batch".

I didn't want to go immediately to 'bad tire design / construction' but that has to be on the bingo chart.
I have run two trail casing mid rears and one gravity casing soft rear. This latest trail casing mid rear is definitely wearing the fastest. The gravity casing showed some feathering of the side knobs at around 25 miles but no tears like the latest one. The first trail mid casing showed feathering around 50 miles and started tearing knobs around 80 miles and was done just past 100. These were ordered in May, July, and now August. If I was able to get acceptable (not asking for Conti level wear, just like 400-500 miles) wear rates out of them I'd never run anything else because performance wise it's my favorite trail rear tire I've ever used. But I can't justify having to replace a rear tire every 75-100 miles.

Patch that tire from the inside. Use a heavy duty or moto version of the old-school Rema kind that uses rubber cement. Gotta clean it, and a little heat helps, but it's not hard. Or even just throw a large Dynaplug in there (bacon strips aren't sufficient). It's not dead.
I use the Slime automotive strips/plugs cut in half (cuz they are like 3" long) on heavier casing tires and they work really well. They don't work so well on XC casings as the thinner casing doesn't seem to hold them in place.

I truly feel like I gained the sidewall support I wanted more of AND still felt a slight increase in traction. I say this with no bias of care either. I wasn't expecting anything or caring much either. I just go through tires and know the patterns I like and it is what it is. So, I was pleasantly surprised.
I only went 1-2 psi lower so far. Still feels more supportive than the old at higher (25F/30R). It feels more damped in the feedback. Noticing less/almost no dings on rocks I usually ding on. I did notice a slight increase in the traction in those really fighting for something spots of off camber, rocks/roots, etc. It was marginal on the traction department but was noticeable with the more supple top on the tire.
Who has some extra cash they can loan me I'm starting a mtb retreading company
I'm assuming he lives local to a bike park, but yeah, I would be riding maxxis DC or Conti soft. if you ride enough to go through one of those in a week, you hopefully are paid to ride. 💸

This is the third Romy (2 trail mid, 1 gravity soft) I've had on since May. Riding this bike 2-3 times a week. Every rear tire I've run before these in this area has lasted 6+ months

Usually if a beam is more flexible at the far end from a rigid connection it will cause less stress at the connection.
Rubber behaves differently than solid materials and maybe the knob deforming loads the outer edge a lot more, stretches it and tears it... Thus starting the undercut.

Agree with JVP- that cut looks fixable.
