The guys were talking about mostly are the peak of whatever class they are competing in. Generally devoting their entire life and forgoing education to make it big. I can’t blame them for not wanting a shot that hasn’t been around a very long time.

If I was a pro racer I would probably have tried to time as much of my vaccinations with the start of the off-season to minimise the effect on my training. However with the Booster requirements that seems a little tricky to get just right.

Anyhow, wouldn't most pro racers and their teams already be vaccinated to be able to get around most travel restrictions?

Athletes who travel the world and have sponsors have lots of incentive to say they're vaxxed, even if they aren't. There's zero incentive to admit you're not vaxxed in the current climate. Best practice is to not correlate vaccination levels amongst elite athletes with their public statements.

Taking for granted that the data from our government are correct, in Italy we have the same number of daily covid deaths in 2022 (with a whopping 85-90% of the adult population vaxxed) as we had last year, at the beginning of the vaccination campaign. On the other hand, look at Japan: very low vaccination rates yet very few deaths.
And it's the same in India and most of Africa.
