Is union discussions really a side quest? We are talking about the short term (and long term I guess) economic health of the industry, and basic economics matters. A Union is a cartel. Thats the literal definition, and it has all the benefits and pitfalls of a cartel. It increases bargaining power in an economic transaction, but it also reduces choice, efficiency, and raises prices. Of course its much more complex than that, and anyone who says it "gave us the weekend" or "destroys companies" is ignoring nuance, complexity, and reality.

curious why people are downvoting? are they happy Their these groups are doing their best to make sure people lose their jobs? I was purely pointing out, Unions while good for most, can also be the opposite depending on whos running them.

just as a side note about holden, Holden got bailed out in Australia - which wasnt helped by The damn Union they had, They wanted their almost no skill assembly jobs paying higher than most other jobs in Australia. Unions in Aus and NZ are serious poison to any company and it's workers, especially the MWU. I've been apart of several as a worker and man they just hold union meetings to suck as much money from a company as possible without any care to their members actual job retention.(there is kids straight out of school with no skills earning...

At least the Shimano mechanism is consistent and reliable. I’ve generally had good luck with most OneUp products, but even after trying the fix kit they sent for these brand-new pedals, the unclipping mechanism still feels inconsistent. I also doubt the pedals are truly “out of stock.” My guess is they pulled them from shelves because of the known issues and are working on another update. They never should have released the pedals in their current state.

We spent so much time worrying about pedal kickback that we didn't stop to consider pedal kickforward

If you’ve owned or worked on a yeti with switch infinity, you’d probably be happy with more bearings instead

The new Orbea lacking any seat stay bridge + trunnion mount shock seems to have the potential to eat shocks. Pretty much all twisting loads on the seatstays are transmitted to the shock.

Interested in the NDS endcap on the back of Brosnans bike. Those concentric axle pivots seem to put a ton of issues into hubs, wonder if it’s similar to what Danny was running in the GT last year.

I hope that tarrifs get presented to us consumers in the "resort fee" or "service charge" itemization fashion for as many products as possible. With that reality staring people glaringly in the face, it will show the remaining sheep that stay aggressively igornant, exactly what the choices of the executive branch are costing them. That will of course be difficult, similarly to the example being discussed above where a dtc brand may pass the tarrif through on a 1/1 basis, but a wholesale/distributorship model has a quadratic price increase as it passes through the line. Maybe if people see the...

Starting to see some real head scratchers of pricing on complete bikes this year. Wondering if PMs and accountants have to price things a certain way despite logic. Check out the yeti SB140. https://yeticycles.com/en-us/bikes/sb140/kits We will use the non LR version for this comparison. Yeti actually has a pretty cool mechanical transmission build kit that uses an x0 crank, chain...

Since the last Trump tariff battles in his first administration, more and more bike stuff has left China. Santa Cruz has largely switched to Thailand for their frames, at least what I am seeing in the US. This is pretty recent so I’m not sure if it’s a total swap. They have historically been built in the skybox composites factories...

Excellent points. Up until maybe 10 years ago, you could find RST products in local bike brands of third world countries (I'm speaking from experience here, I'm Argentinian). Then, SunTour started to gain market share. These days most entry/supermarket bikes have unbranded or same-brand-as-the-bike forks, mostly AliExpress basic stuff. Still, RST seems to be big in the APAC area, and in some way, in Brazil. You have to understand there's no way for a guy with a basic income of less than 250 USD to get the kind of money necessary to buy a brand new Fox 40 or Rockshox...

Hi y'all, Longtime reader, though I rarely post. Some context I run a small non-bike company in Sheridan, WY. We make a ton in house, import a little, and outsource a bunch to other companies in the US. We do about 40% of our sales in Canada. These tariffs will put the brakes on the entire economy. My business is well positioned to make 100% of our product in the US, which would seemingly be a boon for us. But who is going to be able to buy it? Will our customers in Canada want to buy our products at...

Cool bike, but Pivot and Santa Cruz are shooting themselves in the foot by only producing Enduro and DH bikes in Carbon Fiber. Most people don't want to baby a long travel rig everywhere they go, they just want to ride it. Go ahead and down vote this post, I don't care.

The BucEee’s wage signs get shared pretty dang often by people I know in the bicycle industry. It’s shameful how little margin is available to pay employees in the retail end of the bike bussiness. anecdotally, The number of newer shops that I’ve seen pop up that are organized as loss-leading tax dodges for wealthy folks still isn’t moving the needle upwards for wages in most markets. It’s painful seeing bussiness survive based on the concept of losing the “appropriate” amount of money every year when there are bike shops across town where ownership actually needs margin dollars to feed...
