Super bummed about this. Though CyclingTips focus was mostly road/gravel, their podcast Nerd Alert had amazing coverage of tech innovation - carbon recycling, additive mfg, supply chain deep-dives, all kinds of enlightening stuff, and a healthy (and entertaining) skepticism of “but it’s 3 watts faster!”. Cough, headset cable routing. Dave Rome’s tool obsessions are dorky in the best way. And most of them ride mountain bikes too. Hoping for good things for them in the future.

Phil is running his own program with support from Propain and a few others. Mind you it's only Propain Factory Racing who paused for 2023. Propain didn't just stop sponsoring riders altogether and Phil wasn't on the factory team. Very unlikely that Phil is the new Pivot rider. That being said, if I had a bike brand and a racing team, I'd move heaven and earth to get him on my team. One of the most stylish riders around. Propain has done incredibly well signing him.

I’ve enjoyed the more progressive bikes I’ve owned over the years. I think not hitting the bottom out bumper is always nice and having a bike that is easy to generate speed on makes for a very fun ride too. Where I think highly progressive bikes can suffer is in high frequency chatter if the leverage curve is too steep. The rear end tends to feel unsettled in those situations and it takes a lot of strength to hold a line. I have had equally as terrible of experiences with overly linear bikes where I am constantly bottoming or blowing...

It makes sense that Atherton would glue Al lugs to Al tubes: they have experience and expertise in bonding and can probably use the same jigs that they use for carbon/ti bikes. They're already setup to make frames in that manner, just have to adjust to the parameters of a different adhesive. Conventional welded Al frames if made in house would require them to learn a lot, hire skilled welders, and buy a lot of equipment. Regarding glued lug Al construction becoming the norm.... perhaps one day, but I don't think it's there yet.

All three articles have been glowingly positive about the suspension on these new Yeti's, but interestingly all three have pretty low overall frame progression- 14% for this guy, 17% for the 160, and I think 11% for the 120. Wondering if Vital's tester has had any bad experiences with more progressive designs or if there's something else going on to make these fairly linear bikes feel like magic to the tester. I'm curious because I'm a similar height and weight to the Jonny and I've been pretty underwhelmed by a lot of the more linear bikes I've ridden- feeling like...

I work in Aerospace, we produce a part for helicopters that is essentially the same principle used at Atherton bikes, albeit our brackets are CNC alloy in to carbon tubes. The bonding of the part is exactly the same, I did actually apply at Atherton when they were looking for people. Bonding of CNC alloy 'lugs' into alloy tubes can also be done, no problem, there are adhesives for all sorts of material bonding out there, 3M being the biggest supplier for all of them. Pretty sure a 3M DP490 after lap shear testing would result in a strong enough...

Yesterday I was at the trailhead and thought damn that’s an expensive bike (top of the line axs slash) and then noticed the sticker for his orthodontic office on his truck. Giggled a little bit for sure.

That was discussed many times. You are buying a brand, not just a tool. Some people will want and pay for that, but for some, that is of no value. A good comparison would be Golf GTI and Hyundai N tuned car. Both probably very similar performance, but Golf is simply "legend" in that category while Hyundai brings the same technology at a lower price for the masses.
