Not to mention the Square-Cube law making it increasingly hard to maintain a competitive W/Kg. I doubt there are any endurance athletes on earth who would ask a genie to be 6” taller.

How big of a disadvantage is being taller on the air resistance front? And how much of an advantage being smaller brings here? If we're banning wheel sizes, why not also ban frame sizes?

Flame me if you’d like, but 32” wheels is one of the few things that has me excited for a new bike. There are so many amazing full suspension bikes now ,and geometry, for whatever discipline, have pretty much leveled out. As someone that rides my Singlespeed as much or more than my FS, I’m excited to build up a rigid Singlespeed 32er. My local trails are fairly mellow and as I get older I appreciate momentum and keeping a higher average pace over “shredding the gnar!”

I have a different opinion. As long as it's a bike with 2 wheels and human power output, I say anything flies. Don't level the playing field. Let it be raw. If the winning combo is sitting in between 60 inch wheels then let that be. Maybe there will be an advantage we don't know yet to shorter people vs taller people. Don't limit the equipment beyond necessary, let it all play out.

I just read through this thread and wanted to bring up a few points I haven't read yet. This is kinda nerdy, but I believe this is the place for it. There's a widespread idea that the bigger wheels accelerate slower due to a higher moment of inertia, but what is forgotten is larger wheels don't need to rotate as...

As a tall guy with long legs and an appetite for big dumb rides that often include shitty 4x4 roads, I’m actually really stoked to see where this whole 32” thing goes. I’d like 32” x 2.4” mezcals for my next lap on the white rim please.

Relating to your last point: The 26 to 29 change, people didn’t really understand how certain geometry aspects worked. Most notably was some brand’s insistence that handling performance was mostly or solely based on wheelbase. Hence the 29er version of bikes coming with a steeper head angle (and a messed up fc:rc ratio, thanks to the longer chain stays) than the 26 equivalent. With predictable results Now I hope designers are more used to the effects and consequences of changing wheel diameter.

Universally sized motor powered vehicles on smooth tracks VS rider size specific kinetic energy machines on varied terrain where momentum is everything I'm 6'2", gimme the juice.

It wasn't that long ago that "15 minute cities" was the latest far right snarl word/term. It didn't hit as hard in Australia but it still comes up from time to time. I work in transport planning and the hysteria around it completely baffled me. How can anyone possibly delude themselves into believing that the idea of city planning based around safety and accessibility for all transport modes and users is some kind of grand (communist?) conspiracy? A bloke I worked with on a few projects once raised Elon Musk's ire on Twitter by calling out his nonsense. It was...

from Hans Rey about ebike development Link: https://hansrey.com/blog/ An Open Letter to the Bicycle Industry By Hans Rey To the leaders, builders, advocates, and riders who shape our industry, I’m writing because I care deeply about where bicycles—and electric bicycles—are headed. We are at a crossroads. The decisions we make about language, power limits, and definitions will determine whether Class 1 e-bikes remain accepted as bicycles—or get grouped with much more powerful machines that don’t belong in the same category. It’s time to define our language and it’s time to draw a line in the sand of when e-bikes become...

Mickey this was awesome, and true IMO; And I realize I'm replying to a week old post and have not read the next page but your post inspired me. The amount of people who think all mechanical objects are made by magic wizards has always astounded me. A counter point would be (and I admit I am 1 whole page...

Bicycles only appear to be luxury toys because of the way high end bikes are marketed. All bicycles are incredibly simple to work on(hence why bike mechanics get paid sub-living wages) and essentially last forever with the most basic maintenance(hence why the bike industry has shifted so heavily to rapid “obsolescence” in a effort to show growth on year over year P+L’s ) A 30 year old bicycle and a brand new bicycle use different interface standards and tools- but a 30 year old bike and a 50 year old bike are both absolutely fine transportation or recreation for 90%...

Thanks for taking the time to write all this. On the surface, commercial real estate construction and the bike industry might not seem related, but I’d argue there’s more to learn from what @ebruner wrote than there is to ignore. A few thoughts, just for the hell of it… First, I’m surprised there weren’t more options for these businesses that otherwise seemed healthy. You’d think they could switch banks or find an entirely different lending instrument, depending on their size. Maybe it’s just easier to wind down and start over? Do you think these guys fully disappear? While service businesses...

Via the EC Discord, online retailers are already pop-up warning US buyers that tariffs and customs fees will likely impact the final price of bike goods. Jeff- for your app, might be cool to add a bit of a market tracker. Choose some basic component of complete bikes as benchmarks and then follow pricing changes overtime. I just bought some Shimano road pedals as I have been putting them off and are a long term investment, I will now be following their pricing over the long term to see what happens. Would be a fun college business school project to...

Does anyone want me to actually unpack why I disagree with sethimus (and others) on this point? I'd really like to get back to bikes + economy in this thread but if we want to go down the rabbit hole on this one, I'm more than happy to.

Hi y'all, Longtime reader, though I rarely post. Some context I run a small non-bike company in Sheridan, WY. We make a ton in house, import a little, and outsource a bunch to other companies in the US. We do about 40% of our sales in Canada. These tariffs will put the brakes on the entire economy. My business is...
