I've destroyed probably 4 shimano crank safety-clip-things from yanking cranks off and somehow never learn my lesson. As an on-brand DVO fork owner I was bleeding the damper after a rebuild - a process that's like a cup-lever bleed on brakes. The damper shaft binds up easily if not well aligned so while peering over the damper to watch for bubbles the damper shaft breaks the stiction and shoots a jet of oil directly into my eye. I guess there's nothing too nasty in motorex damper oil since the oil didn't hurt much and I can still see, but it...

A while ago I had an unlucky streak of breaking two Spesh Enduro frames (both headset area). After the second break I was offered a Stumpy Evo replacement frame instead which I gladly accepted. When building it up I noticed the frame came with an extra linkage. "Sweet" I thought as I assumed that the extra one was for mulleting the bike and carried on assembling. After riding a few months on it I decided I was pretty happy with the 29er life and decided to sell off the mullet link. A couple days later the guy who bought the...

This just happened to me today. A couple months back, I bought a new frame and started building it up, mostly transferring parts from a donor frame. Work has been uncomfortably busy, so I've taken my time, doing bits at a time on the weekend as a form of therapy. I'm usually a good if not anal mechanic, and in this case I really focused on each job at hand, extracting everything I could from the process. Anyway, I finished the build today. After gazing at the new bike with a sense of pride, I did a quick lap around...

Had a creak, started simple, removed the cranks and BB and regreased, still there. Went through each pivot and checked and regreased bearings and pivot bolts. Still there. Pulled the fork off, repressed the cups into the frame and the creak was still there. It is now about 1 am, started at around 8:30pm after dinner with the wife. Went back to the cranks, tried the pedals, still there!!! Pulled the cranks out and they are Raceface, checked the chain ring, that was loose, only slightly, tighten it up and creak was gone!!! Now whenever I get a creak that...

Nice thread! So, I started biking in 92 and since pupils don't have cash for workshop repairs, I was thrown into wrenching the same moment I began and never stopped. These days I am totally guilty of wrenchers' cockiness, yeah got it all covered, noone can tell me anything. Last fall I got a Slash gen6, the one with the chain tourism, so to speak, idler pulley and additional pulley at the chain guide. From the start, the drivetrain made a slight churning sound, which disappeared when lubing the chain. Instant jump to conclusion: yeah, must be the complicated chain...

Do you have any idea what the insertion length is on the seat tube? It looks pretty short. Wondering if I can get a short stack dropper post in there. Thanks.

That is wild to me. Cool bikes I get the desire to support the project, but 4k for a frame? I would much sooner get a raaw.

Spending the better part of my last 15 years managing shops, here's my take on the maintenance situation. Some people don't think of bikes as machines that require regular maintenance. So, when that bike gets to the shop and it hasn't been touched by a mechanic since the day it was built, they are going to get sticker shock by the huge bill. Some people think maintenance cost are proportional to what they paid for the bike. I had a guy who bought a used road bike with a Campy group that was completely worn out. We practically had to...

I understand that as a business, bike shops make money primarily on labor, so they need to be able to sell service and maintenance to people. And I want to support local shops, but the problem in lies that doing your own work is part of the experience of mountain biking, and it saves money. Some of my friends' favorite memories are the times our buddy did a full dropper rebuild in the rain in a parking lot, or just drinking beers in the basement putting a new drivetrain on. I have literally done every bit of work on my...

Hello! I admit I have seen the ”Shimano Reports Bike Maintenance a Hidden Barrier to Participation” title on the home page and I got curious. I didn't read the entire thing, nor did I read all the comments here, as I don't have time right now (but I will make some time to read), so excuse me, but I feel the urge to say something. From my understanding, Shimano is whining that in Europe people are cycling less, because bike maintenance is hindering them. Did I understand right? If yes, than I find Shimano to be at least a bit...

This is basically a 'concept bike' that you can actually buy, which is cool. Props to Orbea for hanging it out through the industry downturn. They just keep making cool sh!t. I'll likely never touch one, hell I may never get hands on a normal Rallon, but I love seeing what they cook up.

Innnnnteresting. I recently bought another amish bike, because I worry I'll switch to ebikes and never go back. I want to pedal for a few more years before I give in and admit that I can't pedal very hard anymore. The climbs kill me. Having something like this might be a good way to stave off that eventual concession to Father Time. It would be like a regular bike ridden by my 25 year-old self. IDK if it's worth $10,000 as a stepping stone to the eventual full-ebike, though.

This looks like the first indistinguishable merging of the ebike and analog bike that we've heading towards for years. It's like a Rallon with functional weights. Almost as light as a g-bike (gas powered shuttle) but much more flexible (self shuttle).

Same here. I remember 15yrs ago thinking it would be awesome if I could climb my DH bike like a trail bike if I had a little assistance.

This is where I thought e-bikes would go when they first started to gain popularity, a bike with a splash of assistance, not a motor with a frame attached to it
