7/18/2025 1:11pm I'm not sure YT would even be valued at a 5-7X EBITDA now. Though it wasn't that long ago, the multiples being given to "high growth D2C" businesses in 2021 was next level. My finger in the wind guess of 10x seemed in the ballpark, and this research report does back this up (though I've never cited or read them before š¬). ... Camping and Hiking targets led M&A pricing, with an average multiple of 12.6x EV/EBITDA from 2017 to the year-to-date 2023. The Sporting Goods segment followed with an average multiple of 10.8x EV/EBITDA, then Tactical & Hunting with...

7/18/2025 8:41am Therw as one of the bigger mail order companies that had an in house bike brand and the rumors were that they would order bikes with the cheapest steel frames they could buy but set-up with top shelf parts.. When the bikes got here, they stripped the bikes and tossed the frames.. A former employer of mine would buy a good amount of closeout bikes, and when it came down to some sizes that didn't sell, they would strip the bikes and sell all the parts at a deep discount.. I never did a breakdown, but he probably made more...

7/18/2025 8:39am I think the primary compensation mechanism for tech bro execs is when they get to imitate Steve Jobs walking around a visually minimal stage design in jeans talking about a powerpoint: https://www.forbes.com/sites/billroberson/2025/03/31/rivians-micromobilā¦

7/18/2025 8:38am The purchase price of a product in no way reflects the margin to the manufacturer, especially in times like this. While @Dave_Camp has inside knowledge from the engineering side, I have the same sort of insights from the finance side. I can tell you with high amounts of confidence a lot of the pricing we are (still) seeing is not sustainable When your margins don't support your baseline cost to run your company + cost of capital, you will end up in bankruptcy. The only question is when, which is based on how strong your balance sheet is and how...

7/18/2025 8:35am Most bike brands have been at the mercy of the big 3(ish*) for a few years now. Their orders are exponentially larger than the rest of the brands, and thus, due to whatever internal pressures they might be facing, drive the pricing we see today. YT is/was a disruptor, but they are still collateral damage as far as I can see. *major players differ by market

7/18/2025 8:35am I find it very ironical and super hypocritical for somebody like the YT main guy to whine about ādiscount warsā, when they basically were the ones who brought this aggressive pricing strategy to the market. Dude, are you for real??? I honestly hope everybody will be OK after this, but I can't remember all the direct-to-consumer brands being too sympathetic towards the bike shops who, at the end of the day, stay at the core of our sport. And the problem is that people really believe that they are entitled to that discounted āhigh end bikeā with top parts, even...

7/18/2025 6:28am I hate to make funny of a crappy situataion for everyone at YT but I had to LOL at the "severely impacted by the global discounting battle in the bike industry" line - they were literally one of the first and most aggressive brands to offer high spec bikes at crazy prices. So its no surprise they are now one of the first of those to be struggling

7/15/2025 9:38am I've been playing around with listening to the gaps between the top 10 finishers at World Cup DH races. The aim is to make them a bit more concrete and understandable than the usual big list of numbers that typically makes up a results sheet. You can see/hear the resulting tool here: https://www.sounds-like-dh.co.uk Grateful for any thoughts!
