I raced my first national dh race in ‘94 on toeclips and a rigid fork. Missy Giove bunnyhopped my carcass in the first corner of my first practice lap, and we’ve been pals ever since.

I worked with a fresh out of college engineer to build a gearbox dh bike for my race team in 2009. Gearboxes are the next best thing to riding chainless for dh. We had to build a servobox so we could have push button electric shifting, because gripshift sucks unless it’s 1995 and some nice guy named Ed is giving...

To make it very clear, I am not anti-enduro; I promoted the first Enduro in New England in 2013, ran the first VA state enduro championship races in 2017, 2018, 2019 and was involved with running all the EWS qualifiers that happened at Windrock, timing the Enduro Southeast Series, running Cranksgiving, etc. It was just obvious from the very beginning...

At least here in the US, DH is getting better and better by the year. In my corner of the world (southeast US) I've witnessed many of my buddies I used to race enduros with buy downhill bikes and swap disciplines in the past few years, including myself. I'll always have a soft spot for enduros, (I trained for years and raced dozens of them, and still do), but it's undeniable that the energy and vibe at downhill events is unmatched. What I've noticed over the past few years at the local, regional, and international levels, is that the pointy...

The median income in the last ranked state (Mississippi) is higher than the median income for the entirety of the UK. Your problem is lack of social programs, not lack of income. American's are obscenely rich, yet have ~15% poverty rate (from OECD data). If you get an international perspective you'd realise how well off the majority of Americans are

Manufacturers shouldn’t be saddled with carrying the burden of a social safety net though- that is a particularly American Problem, and it’s why this thread exists in the first place… The American economy is a blind consumption machine based on hope and smoke and mirrors and the fantasy of infinite economic growth The underpinnings of the economy are not sound-...

Your local bike mechanic doesn’t make enough money to enter a bike race, let alone buy a bicycle. The stock market isn’t the economy. The vast majority of americans are living one paycheck away from homelessness, in constant fear of medical debt, with less purchasing power every week due to the financialzation of the economy, stock buy-backs and sheer unregulated...

Max, Sometimes people forget that I look at the results from pretty much every bicycle race in America. What I see is that you are one of the people that “loves enduro” but only raced once, 4 years ago. To me, that means that to you, Enduro is in fact, dead? My guess is, you find it hard to justify...

The Levo killed the enduro star. How many e-bikes where being sold in 2015 and how many enduro bikes are being sold compared to e-bikes today? It’s a lot less about how to broadcast a race than it is about sales trends

A “mindset” doesn’t make for a sustainable sport. Riding off-map loamers in the national forest with your friends and timing without permits isn’t enduro… That’s just riding bikes.

Endurance racing and Enduro as it is i see as separate, with current enduro format evolving from a mix of big mountain endurance races and Super D in the early 2010's. Its just different then endurance. While I'm happy to be wrong, I doubt you will see the general public that do enjoy following enduro care about timed up's or the bikes that come with it. They wanted untamed DH tracks on heavy hitting bikes where anyone could come out on top if they had it in them and for a while, that's what they got. 2016-2021 were fantastic. Wyn's...

Nah, It’s dead. It was obvious from the beginning Enduro was going to be a fad, and now it’s dead like 4x or DS, just like everyone who loved 4x and DS predicted. A few tiny scenes where a couple people care, zero new investment from governing bodies or the industry, zero media coverage, etc. There just aren’t enough places...

Are brakes the new component that we've realised is easy to make with a run-of-the-mill machine shop? I expected more cranks to go with the overpopulated machined-stem-and-pedal market, especially since 5dev proved that you don't even need to make a good product to charge stupid amounts for it, but perhaps we're leapfrogging to brakes instead.

The bankruptcy hearing was definitely on 9/11/2001 and that's when Schwinn was broken up into two with the bicycle side (Schwinn bike, GT, Riteway) going to Pacific and the fitness side (Schwinn Airdynes, "Spinning" bikes, etc) being purchased by Direct Focus aka Nautilus. At that time I was managing a big IBD in Boulder, CO and due to the events of that day we sent all the staff home before opening while a few of the managers stuck around to receive packages and generally sit around in shock. We carried a fairly decent selection of mid to high-end Schwinn Road...

@Stiksandstones Didn’t the nyc-based Bankruptcy judge sell Questor GT/Schwinn to Pacific on 9/11/01 between the times the first and second planes hit the twin towers? Everyone I ever knew that worked at post 9/11 GT tells that as part of the lore.

If Trek hadn’t put all their eggs in the Armstrong-worship basket 20 years ago, they’d probably still have functioning steel and aluminum production lines in house, like they did before they fully embraced the concept of 4 different levels of imported carbon for everyone…
