Yeah I saw this also. And in this thread is definitely leaning on the side of DAQ, but there’s some people out there who don’t like it and that’s Ok. Jordi in all the Fox videos never seemed to care for Daq. It’s ok, personally I know the benefits, it helps me and my friends. I know you can get lost in it, but you can also get lost in rider feedback who doesn’t know how to explain what they are feeling. To me, data doesn’t lie.

Quite so: there's a fundamental difference between those methods. Characterising each stroke (which my system does, by the way) carries another set of gotchas: what counts as a stroke? Real suspension data doesn't look like a neat sine wave. You need to allow for some hysteresis near the stroke end points: if you use a strict 'velocity crosses zero' test for stroke end you end up with loads of tiny strokes with no useful information. I opened up my BYB fork sensor to clean it up - was a little easier than the AIM ones were - its a snug fit but not as tight since the screws hold it in place, so can be carefully pryed apart with a metal spudger or blade. The wipers looked pretty good, a tiny bit of dirt in there so I'll clean it out, replace the o-rings and add a tiny amount of thin super lube grease to the contact points to reduce friction and give smoother contact for the wipers. My setup is linkage driven with bearings and cheap rotational sensors ($3 each) The kinematics setup in the app then translates the angle of rotation of the sensor into shock/wheel travel. The firmware/app also support linear sensors. I have compiled extensive documentation on both the firmware architecture, hardware build and daq operation. So I sacrificed a string pot on the altar of science. TL;DR: So far, the results are encouraging. I used a lathe to drive the pot via an offset crankpin, allowing me to calculate the theoretical string trajectory exactly, and the maximum velocities and accelerations at different lathe speeds. The downside of this arrangement is secondary vibration: because the string oscillates vertically, its inertia introduces an error that gets larger as the speed of rotation grows. Here is my modified version of the KPM-12J Potentiometer. I covered the pot with two sliding carbon tubes together with two 3D printed endcaps. It adds 35g to the pot but provides a whole lot of stiffness and protection against dirt and grime 😁 I also made another short video trying to explain a bit about TRAZER for those who are interested :-)

Sounds like what's needed is a roll-your-own string pot that can be built for about $10... coming soon to an open-source data acquisition project near you. Maybe. The string pot works well, the only negative on ours is the mounting. The awkward shape almost always requires us to print a new mounting bracket for each bike to get proper alignment, whereas the linear pots typically can reuse mounting hardware. We just use the Aim pot but there's other options out there that might solve this issue. FYI, KTM has used the string pot on the front for years.
