12/16/2025 1:10pm I had a 90 bent ball joint stuck to the front side of the upper link. And a standard ball joint stuck to the underside of the top tube. I took the shock out while mounting and made sure that in the full range of motion, the tracer wasn't getting bent or reaching the limits of the ball joints' swivel. I can't find any pictures, sorry.

12/16/2025 1:08pm I'm aware of that and am usually doing that in Linkagedesign to get proper rear wheel readings for my BYB kit. But if you use sort of "random" points between your rear and front triangle (as pictured above on that crestline), you get (at least in my mind) superfunky sensor displacement that has nothing to do with the shock movement. But I guess you could take the same approach in linkagedsign and use a high-res picture in order to get ~10 points of real wheel travel and corresponding sensor length and interpolate.

12/16/2025 1:08pm When I did it, I flipped the bike upside down, took the wheel out but replaced the rear axle. I tried to set it up so that the tires were level before I removed the wheel (extended seatpost IIRC). I then hooked a ratchet strap to the rear axle to hold it up, at the starting shock stroke position, then removed the shock. Key is figuring out what your zero stroke is, most frames can extend a bit past that. Then I measured vertically axle to floor in 5mm increments, taking corresponding measurements from the sensor stroke. When I plotted...

12/16/2025 1:07pm I've done it a very similar way in the past - I think this was an aluminium bar or timber board attached to the frame parallel to the "ground". I recorded the points then plugged it in to excel and used the fitted trendline to create the leverage curve. Although this was using the Aim system where you could make a custom math channel using that equation directly in the software I've been making progress on a set of tools to help with set up, DAQ and frame measurement - *testing magentic encoders as rotary sensors, and also a tool...

12/12/2025 8:20am Thank you for the pictures. I was thinking of how to do this by mounting to the down tube and to the link. I sat there for a bit and didn't get creative enough. Are those mounts bent sheet metal or 3D printed? The tape doesn't interfere with the link rotation? If I can get this figured out I'll have...

12/8/2025 9:54am Well add in latest model Santa Cruz 5010 with DVO Topaz as a rig that BYB doesn't fit. That tunnel is toight. I really need to put together some of those pivot bolts with "nuts" on the outside like the pro teams have. Some tack weld or JB weld aught to do it right?

12/3/2025 1:56pm @thegromit I’ve found that the Auto Tune creates a too soft feel for me and my fox factory / performance elite cannot be opened up enough to achieve the rebound and compression settings suggested. Though I do want to get with my suspension servicing friends and try to shim and customize these forks and shocks to the Auto Tune. Part...

12/1/2025 12:32pm Hello @mattattostown , Yes I confirm that with the BYB Telemetry software, it's possible to use the reverse leverage calculation (using a linear sensor). We're currently adding the integration for angle sensors too. Best, Enrico

11/24/2025 9:53am " The discussed issue with the mounting of the rear sensor is also a problem for me, even though I don't need to mount a linear sensor. I'm thinking of mounting the sensor to the seat tube and connect the rotating magnet to the rear triangle of the bike to measure the wheel travel. With this data I could do...

11/3/2025 11:04am It's kind of hard to have exciting bikes anymore, even newish brands fall into the same kind of homogenous design, marketing, and aesthetic that a lot of other brands have. For me, an exciting brand is doing something new with linkage design, and philosophy behind their design, or they have a good story or idea behind their project. Brands that come to mind for me are Ministry cycles, and Frameworks respectively. Ministry is doing something different with their linkages and experimenting with the manufacturing techniques they use, while documenting the whole process in a really laid back way. I like...

11/3/2025 11:00am Atherton is making exciting bikes. I'd go out of my way to check out an Atherton and make a comment if I saw someone with one in a lift line or on a shuttle. I saw a '92 Bridgestone MB-0 ("zed") the other day. That was VERY exciting.

@LePigPen - I am a mental health professional, and you are not entirely wrong! I wouldn't say it's about getting angry, but more about a mechanism that allows the person to 'lock in." Sometimes, when these things happen (losing the chain, a slight slip-up, being late to the start), it creates just enough tension, in a good way, that it forces a rider to focus on basic things. So if the chain brakes, the first thing to come to mind... after "fuck" is most likely, "keeping speed" or "minimal braking" or "pump every backside" In many cases, during a typical...

Totally understood. Part of what we're talking about is how noise affects rider focus (and we're having fun doing it). Chains can reduce suspension performance, not arguing against that, it's been discussed for years. Thought it'd be fun to go further than that. Gwin used earplugs in race runs to stay focused. He's said it in interviews. Cool, right? No, it doesn't "technically" make his bike faster.. but who cares it's super interesting! If you can focus better, you can go faster. I'll leave it at this, because it's fun: do you think reduced pedal kick is more important for...

You are correct! modern bikes have begun to better account for kickback though and will continue to get better at it. There are two types of pedal "kickback" out there these days: 1) The pedal kick you're describing, and 2) The chain whipping around and adding commotion to your ride. Some people call it "chain energy". If you have a bike with zero pedal kick (or for this example, lets say negative pedal kickback), then all of your "pedal kick" is just the chain whipping around. That Santa Cruz has pretty low pedal kickback, and the Frameworks, with ochain, also...
