jeff.brines Liked a forum topic DJI's E-MTB Play: Avinox, Amflow and the Future Business of eebs
4/28/2026 12:55pm Why this thread exists The Bikeconomics megathread keeps getting derailed by DJI/Avinox/Amflow chatter so I'm spinning it off. Goal here is one place to talk about the DJI ecosystem, where it's headed, and what it means for the rest of the industry. Business, technology, regulatory, and the inevitable trail access tangents are all fair game. Try and keep the broader bike industry economics stuff in the megathread . The setup, for anyone just walking in I wrote a longer piece on this over at my substack, but the short version: DJI is a roughly $11B Shenzhen tech giant that decided...

4/26/2026 2:16pm Had my first ride on the EX 1700 today, DT Swiss’ new alu wheel that comes with the chain device installed. It cost £400 for the full wheel at RRP which feels like quite a fair price. It felt really great, the bike almost felt like it floated under me, my friend noted that my rolling speed seemed high. It’s...

4/25/2026 12:14am Any chance we can take this ebike power rules chat to a new thread? A few pages ago it was fascinating reading about Alta's struggle and DJI's structure vs old school German power.

4/24/2026 4:26pm So we can self shuttle in the Summer and "heli ski" in the Winter? 600kg/4=150kg. Myself plus harness, ropes, avi gear, board and winter layers aren't even close to 1 drone's weight limit. You don't even have to come out of your bindings. I also love the mental image of people seated on their bikes, clipped in even, flying to the top of a DH run. Mr Jeff Brines, your CAST (amazing product btw) bindings are going to be obsolete.... Wait, now are the kite skiers and surfers going to complain about e-assisted kite skiers accumulating more hang time on...

4/23/2026 7:15am I got ~30 minutes each with Avinox and Bosch and am still figuring out what to do with the content (podcast or writing). Unsurprisingly, Bosch is a bit "disappointed" (I'm paraphrasing) in the direction Avinox is pushing the industry. They leaned heavily into trail access and stewardship, and suggested the current crop of high-output motors doesn't jive with the effort they've put into balancing stakeholders and leading the powertrain side responsibly. For fun, I looked back to see if Bosch has ever pushed power or torque limits on their own accord, and from what I can tell the answer is...

4/23/2026 7:14am I half wrote an essay before realising it was more of a rant; essentially I think the power wars risk breaking the social contract of responsible land use, where I live we have very small woods and they’re intensively used for recreation. The tacit agreement is that you’re allowed to do you there under your own power, no dirt bikes...

4/20/2026 10:40pm Not to continue beating a dead horse, but conceptually there's a massive difference in parts availability and even what constitute repairs when you're comparing that YZ to a modern ebike. Even at the LBS, there is no repair happening to your ebike. In the context of Bosch and Shimano at least a repair means throwing away the faulty / broken part of the system and installing a new part either under warranty or at full pop. With the rare exception of loose wires / connectors there's no diagnosis or fault-finding beyond find the broken part / replace with new part...

4/17/2026 5:04am Hope HB.912 Hope’s new HB.912 trail bike looks awfully sleek. 120mm rear wheel travel, 130mm fork, four-bar linkage, and in-house-made frame. Definitely one of those bikes that can fly under the radar, but the longer you look at it, the more you appreciate it. The bike should be available closer to summer, with the frameset starting at ~$5,400 USD.

4/16/2026 4:25am Re brembo: Will be interesting to see how they survive in the real world. Was telling a buddy of mine that WC racing isn’t really a stress test considering that those brakes are bled every run. Based on hydraulic leverage ratios they will be quite powerful… Another player isn’t a bad thing…

4/16/2026 4:25am Could get 20 db8s for the same price. https://www.bananaindustries.co.uk/products/sram-db8-4-piston-brake-set… All jokes aside, these are double the price of the new Hopes. If they’re anything less than way better performance wise, I can’t see them being a big commercial success in the aftermarket world. And the Hopes look incredible if you care about that sort of thing. Bright red doesn’t go...

4/16/2026 3:04am I don't want to come off as angry or pretentious, but I find what's going on with Avinox and the Spesh "class 2" emtb disgusting. I'm curious how the people at traditional bike companies feel about what they're helping proliferate into our world for all of the people who created and maintain the trails (mostly volunteers like myself) to contend with. How conflicted are they? Between the general financial malaise in the industry, 32" wheels nobody truly seems excited about, and the unprincipled embrace of avivox/DJI/amflow, what is general morale like? Conversely, and assuming everyone there isn't also yelling at...

4/10/2026 9:49am Last year I was in the market for a frame and I contacted them directly asking whether they’d restock my size. They said no and that they’d be launching a new bike next year (so this year). So I wouldn’t count them out yet.

3/25/2026 10:28am Got myself a pair of those. Raicam is an Italian manufacturer. They originated outside of the cycling industry, can’t remember exactly. It was all very neatly packaged, the bleedkit is supreme, rotors and pads seem very nice. Setting them up was a charm, bleeding was super easy and everything has a nice touch to it. Original Pads have no rattle, pad shape is the same as Shimano, TRP, etc. 4P Brakes, pistons work very evenly, it’s a mineral-oil system…it ticks a lot of boxes for me. I haven’t put any meters on them yet but this seems to be a...

3/23/2026 2:54pm I’ve married a DB8 caliper to a Shimano XT lever. Seems to be holding oil… But will it work well? Or will I be killed? It’s only the front that I’ve made this frankenbrake with as the caliper was weeping on the shimanos. Haven’t yet bedded it in but it has a much more mushy feel to it than shimano...

11/19/2025 11:02pm I filled this in but just FYI atleast in the UK we also have red graded trails- your typical trail centre will have green (absolute beginners), blue, red, black and then sometimes double black and/or orange pro lines. In that system, the red tends to be the more challenging of the XC loops, or like something for an intermediate rider.
