DontWorryImAPilot Added a reply to Modern bike sizing (aka am I buying the wrong size bike)
5/27/2025 10:01am I agree with you in most bike-related respects. But I don't think sizing recommendations are included in that. They definitely make a million different angle/feature/layup/etc. "improvements" in the hopes you'll buy their new bike. That benefits them, though. If they can talk you into a 63.5º head angle this year and come back next year with a 64º angle but...

DontWorryImAPilot Added a reply to Modern bike sizing (aka am I buying the wrong size bike)
5/26/2025 10:05pm I don't see it as "these damn bike companies are moving away from me" as much as "these bike designs are evolving and these bike companies find [this] sizing to work best for people of [this] height range who ride the bike [in this sort of way]." It would be REALLY against the bike companies' best interest to inappropriately size...

5/26/2025 11:29am What's extra sick about that Andorra video is that these guys are fierce competitors...but they have no issue riding together, pushing each other on, and in doing so, potentially "giving up" some of their own advantage. I realize it's not that cut and dry, and that they are still just cruising here, but regardless...there are not that many elite level sports where you'd see this. Mountain biking rules.

5/25/2025 12:14pm 1) I think this would vary with the hub mfgs themselves, I have seen an assembly drawing for a front hub that had a tolerance of +- 1mm for the effective width (which is huge). In measuring maybe a dozen random boost front hubs over the years, I have never found one more than 0.5mm over or under 110mm. 2) Potentially a big effect. Increasing or decreasing effective hub width by 0.2mm can be enough of an adjustment to go from a "sticky" chassis/bushing fit, to one where the uppers drop to the bottom with gravity. A floating axle system...

5/25/2025 12:06pm GT seems to have only sponsored good folks. They came to my old hometown a million years back to do a bmx show. There was a 3rd rider that I don't remember, but Dave Voelker and Tom Haugan came to town. I drove those dudes to/from the airport and a couple places; super nice and seemed stoked that people were...

5/23/2025 7:30am ^yet to feel that way about a bike shop but been there 😂 While I think an increasingly modular Rallon seems unlikely. I do think it is an interesting to idea to have an updated frame that plays well with the old one to give racers and tinkerers more options. Fire off an extra round of the old molds (or potentially repackage your unsold product) as extra warranty/crash replacement stock and sell it to the people who want to get really nerdy. Or just might prefer the old bike they are used to to one with very small differences for...

5/23/2025 6:29am User name checks out. ...and also it's a great bunch of thoughts. I hadn't played it out as far as you did but I definitely had the thought that it seems potentially pretty smart from a cashflow perspective. I may not be understanding their whole process correctly, but less money tied up in mold and production investments and moving those...

5/20/2025 9:35pm I honestly think Rockshox doesn't get enough credit for their attention to friction - everyone loves to talk about the latest dampers but those come well after the friction and the spring in terms of what actually matters. I noticed things like increasing the bushing length and carefully choosing bath oil viscosity (not too thick in most forks, but the short travel skinny leg forks get heavier oil) along with good alignment and clearances in the new forks. Fox still use very short bushings in all their models, plus I'm positive the oil channels they added in the lowers do...

5/20/2025 1:31pm It's funny because, spray paint the 'jump markers' pink or red, and none of this is an issue. Like if you wanna get rid of tape, for whatever reason, sure go for it. But if your replacement is... Well, dogshit. At least put in the lowest common denominator effort to make it easier on riders and viewers. If dangerous rocks are painted pink for visibility, 'jump markers' (if thats what they are) should also be painted pink and represent potential danger (aka, GAP!).

5/19/2025 11:02pm From what I’ve been able to find out—and judging by Orbea’s Instagram post—it’s more than certain that there’s a new Rallon coming. There will be one DH version with Fox Factory suspension and a 225x75 shock, while the rest will likely be enduro-oriented, probably using a 205x65mm shock. I'm not sure whether the lower shock mount will be interchangeable or not.

5/19/2025 10:03pm You bring up a good point. I hadn't considered people could sandbag it. This is why I pull others in when I'm brainstorming anything (whether it's "not-my-job-to-solve-this-problem-thought-exercises" like this or otherwise)! Maybe a better variation would be "of the splits completed before the impediment occurring in the scheduled finals run, the times that will be assigned to those splits will...

5/19/2025 9:45pm I'm completely on-board for that. Maybe the bike has to be cleaned by a 3rd party so no changes can be made? Maybe the rider has to do it? Or maybe that's the metaphorical (and literal) weight on the other side of the scale of justice? Maybe a rider can take a reride with all the new knowledge from getting...

5/19/2025 9:26pm Making them start the rerun with a muddy bike and kit is not fair (also looks terrible), especially if the mud drys out during the wait and makes the bike heavier and potentially interferes with the wheels and drivetrain movement.

5/19/2025 3:01pm I thought I was in this thread, not the other one. I guess it's relevant to both and I'd love to see what others think so I'll post it here as well. Sorry for the copy/paste.
