Does anyone know what they're end goal is by doing this? Do they not want privateers at all and just the factory/elite teams? Or is this a way of squeezing more money out of people to register a team and pay the fees?

All of them think they can make it Formula One.
But Formula One is the wealthiest people in the world in the most unobtainable vehicles on the planet.
Hosted in the richest cities on the planet in front of millions.
It really is an asinine comparison.
Cutting out the masses who race is cutting off your nose to spite your face. The masses of privateers & their supporters are the people willing to drive to remote mountain villages and hike up 1500 feet of vertical.

RIDERS TO WATCH

While defending women’s UCI Cross-country overall champion Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and the reigning men’s UCI World and Olympic champion Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) won’t be lining up in Brazil, the field is still stacked with explosive talent.

Alessandra Keller (Thömus Maxon), Loana Lecomte (Canyon CLLCTV XCO) and Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) are amongst the favourites in the women’s Cross-country, while Nino Schurter (Scott-SRAM MTB Racing Team) will be looking to repeat his win from the last time the UCI World Cup visited Brazil in 2022.

In the UCI Cross-country Short Track, Keller and Evie Richards (Trek Factory Racing Pirelli) are the riders to watch in the women’s field. For the men, it’s hard to look beyond Victor Koretzky (Specialized Factory Racing) – the Frenchman the proud owner of a 100%-win record for the last three UCI Cross-country Short Track World Cups.

If I remember right, the World Series is the overarching name for the whole thing, the individual disciplines are still called World Cups.

and I have good word that in some venues they are now charging the teams for water and electricity in EDR, not sure it if was always a charge in other disciplines, but the amount its ridiculous for at least one example venue for 2024

I think most often in the past ews was at venues that didn't provide electricity or water. So now it's world cup enduro and the races are at venues that maybe already host DH, and teams are offered water and electricity etc... then makes sense to charge for it. Xc and DH have always been charged I think. Usually the money goes to local organisation

For some reason it’s today. I spent a bunch of time trying to figure it out as well. Not sure why it’s a day later or on the same day as elites.

It's collectively known that ESO wants to cut down the number of riders so they can have a TV/stream package that's more appealing. Fewer riders in the final so they can show all of them and shorter tracks so they can have cameras on the whole course. Semifinals are a way to sugarcoat this. The blatant unfair treatment towards privateers and smaller teams appear to be just cheap tactics to drive them out.

Sometimes collective wisdom isn't very wise 😆

They have managed to cover the longest of tracks top to bottom already. Gotta wait and see if they cut track length at all this year.

I imagine thet definitely want to reduce entries as last season had highest ever entry numbers for DH. But stopping privateers booking pit space probably has more to do with the increase in the number of UCI teams. Cos if you register as a team then you are guaranteed pit space. So maybe most venues are maxed out? Especially those with enduro?

Sort of on topic:

Has anyone watched the season 2 of Race Tapes on Red Bull TV yet? I've watched two so far, and they're really good.

The Finn Iles one is just brutal, though. The other site's podcast had an interview with the creators where they basically said they're more interested in telling a good story than actually communicating reality. Evidently Finn was in the room at a public screening they had up in the PNW and they all said that was a little uncomfortable. I don't want to go into the specifics and spoil it too much, but I can imagine that would have been a little rough. Still love, Finn, though and wish him all the best this season.

I saw that, and my thought was that UCI is making Mens U23 the flagship event for Saturday??

Secondarily, in a few events, the U23 Women race concurrently in the Elite Women race on Sunday, in a separate start. (Not at Maripora however)

I just watched it; I didn't feel like it was cringy. Nothing wrong with telling the story of a young man figuring shit out.

I mean... when they showed him talking about that hip and how cool it was and how he'll style it out but his scrub isn't as good in that direction... then they showed him getting DQ'd and zero points on that specific hip and overdubbed the French announcers saying something about not trying to be stylish/cute and just take care of business.

That's like some pretty significant editorializing, especially in that they painted a picture of Finn as cocky and bigheaded in the past.

I guess I don't equate scrubbing a jump as cocky. It oftentimes can be the fastest way through a section, and if his feet stayed on the pedals, it would have been perfect. I agree there was a safer way through that corner and that they teed that one up early for the story, though.

I totally agree that it’s not cocky. Thafs my whole point. That’s what bothered me about it. I think they tried to paint it that way. They admitttd in the interview that they worn with archetypes and create stories. I mean: I get it. He pointed out this specific part of track as being cool. Then he screwed it up and his season went down from there. But they made it all about some deeper character flaw he’s battling or something. That’s what I thought was brutal. Admittedly: I had listened to a podcast about this before watching, so maybe I was just focused on it.
