Hi,
I've got an Evoc 280L Bike Travel Bag.
I have to deflate/squeeze the 29in mountain bike tires 2.4 in order to put them in the pockets.
I'm currently using tubes but I would like to swap to tubeless.
I'm afraid though that tubeless tire sealant goes everywhere (when traveling) because I really have to deflate the tires a lot.
Did anyone ever try that?
I had to squeeze my wheels in a Thule bag this summer. With them deflated to about 10psi I was just able to get them in and had no issues with re-inflating the tires on the other end. The only concern would be if you have to deflate them enough that you break the bead when you're jamming them in the bag.
I've used many. like posted above don't totally deflate them leave 10-15 psi in them to keep the bead seated. same with suspension parts leave some air in them and slowly deflate them som CC and fox shocks had problems with seals rolling if deflated to fast.
The Evoc bag is good about keep wheels away from cranks but some put the crank arms right against them. Seems like a great way for a baggage carrier to crack some carbon hoops.
I have the Dakine bag and used it on a couple trips now and prefer it to the evoc bags I had borrowed off friends in the past. I find the wheels fit better, large frames fit without issues without having to get an 'XL' bag and it's significantly lighter so bike and bag (just) stay within most airlines limits for a regular piece of luggage without having to strip everything off the bike.
+1 for Dakine.
+2. Can i ask you why do you want to change from tube to tubeless? What are the advantages for you? I am reading an article about those tires here https://www.bikertricks.com/tubeless-bike-tires/ and trying to understand why the tires became so popular in one point. Maybe i am just not a picky rider, but i definitely don't need to change something which is already functioning well.
Chain Reaction bag I can fit 29 wheel and tire fully inflated
my wife uses a dakine bag and I've got an evoc. The evoc seems to be a bit more ridged / more secure, and the dakine is a bit easier to pack and unpack.
both fit our 2.5" 29" wheels, fully inflated. I'd recommend both for what it's worth
Are you using the EVOC Pro bag (think its 305l or something like that)? I've got the old 280 and struggling to get my 29's with Speech Butcher 2.3's in - have to deflate the tyres and squeeze...
+3 I have the Dakine bag and on a recent riding trip to Iceland, I was able to unpack and assemble my bike at least 20 minutes faster than my 2 buddies, both with EVOC bags.
My Large Transition Spur with 2.4 tubeless tires was able to fit in the wheel sleeves with the tires deflated to about 5-10 PSI and some persuasion. I also didn't remove my rotors from the wheels and they were fine when I arrived at my destination.
Revitalizing an old thread: does frame size matter with the Evoc, and am I going to have trouble fitting an XL enduro bike into an Evoc Bike Bag? I have a Santa Cruz Megatower, for reference. Have a large Mega right now but considering getting an XL. Worried it could be a problem with the Evoc Bike Bag I'm about to get.
Worst case you can drop the fork and shock air let it duck in on itself and it makes it shorter. Or remove the shock and pull the rear up/forward.
But I can’t speak directly for that bag. I use DB Savage bag.
Which EVOC Bag you have? EVOC Bike Travel Bag Pro takes max 1300mm wheel base. XL Megatower is quoted as 1298mm wheel base. Tight, but doable!
Great info! Couldn't find info about wheelbase size anywhere, so that answers the question. I believe it's the regular model, not the pro model, but this gives me the exact language needed to do some google searching. Thank you!
Squeezed my XL Megatower in the normal/old evoc bag this summer. I did have to deflate/compress the fork all the way and it just barely fit.
Side note, people not removing your rotors, have you seen what happens to baggage at the airport?
Did the same to an XL yeti in the old evoc bag. Tied a paracord between the crown and stem.
Got a current generation EVOC bag ( standard not pro) and my large Nukeroof Mega 290 just fits.
Hey, are y'all taking tires off to fit them in the EVOC bag? Just flew with it for the first time and I was literally using tire levers to get the tires past the zipper on the external wheel pockets. Let most of the air out of the tires to squeeze them in, but didn't want to take off and remount tires or have sealant leaking out of the deflated tires on the rim. I have the normal boring Bike Bag, not the Bike Bag Pro or XL.
I've flown a lot with the previous EVOC pro bag (I think its now the standard bag) and have never had to take the tires off. Even had it work fine with cushcore and 2.5 WT maxxis. I make sure to put the front wheel in before the frame and the rear wheel on the side that zipps up.
Same story here, 2.5 tires were a really tight fit, I had to deflate a almost all the way and wiggle the wheels in and especially up to get the zippers closed at the bottom. Maybe closing them up top would be easier? Was concerned about sealant leaking too but didn’t have an issue.
Any time I fly with a bike, I just go to a shop and get a cardboard bike box. I've flown bikes back and forth across the planet a number of times this way now, and have never had anything worse than a slightly tweaked rotor.
Just to inform that there's a new Evoc bike bag pro that's double the price but 1100g lighter (9600g -> 8500g) than the old model. I wonder if there are any other real changes. No reviews so far. https://evocsports.com/products/bike-bag-pro-1
My own XL size bike has a 1320 mm wheelbase and it seems a bit unsure what bag will it fit. The 18,2kg weight is also a little issue with some of the airlines' 23kg maximun weight so I'm ending dismounting some of the parts and put them in check-in luggage. It seems that the easy ones could be:
Brake discs 2 x 184g (223mm TRP RS05), in any case, it would be good to have them secured in a hard case
Rearshock 965g (Fox DHX2)
Chain 245g
Frontbrake 300g (Saint)
Seat/Seatpost 365g
Any tips or fresh ideas on this on?
I've also thought about making the bike bag from EVA foam and carbon tubes. The frame would have to be laser scanned and 3-4 layers of EVA foam could be easily CNC machined to provide glovelike fit. The bottom could be made of sandwiched carbon or plastic with dismountable wheels. The trickiest part would be to make a hardcase carbon cover, I guess, and of course, this kind of hobby lobby project could easily way be more expensive.
Thanks for the heads up. This things looks sick. The worst part about the old Evoc Pro bag is that is was considerably heavier than their "normal" bag, but this one is basically the same weight, fits today's longer MTB's, looks easier to load and use, etc. Someone should get one and report back.
I currently have the classic Evoc bag (the Danny Macaskill edition) and with my size large/1280mm wheelbase 17.7 kg/38 pound bike I always have to be VERY creative to take off parts, shock, tires, etc and put them in my other checked bag to get under the 25 kg/53 pound limit. I flew on British airways recently and it was a 50 pound limit and it was BRUTAL. Front tire, rotors, shock, crankset, chain, tools, and front brake all had to come off, and a lot of those were being removed in the airport terminal after I failed the first weigh-in. Tire sealant everywhere.
In the future, I need to just budget ahead to pay the overweight charge because the checked-bad-weigh-in scramble at the airport is the worst.
When I go to queenstown I'll take a bike box as I know it fits my 1340mm wheelbase XL bike. It's only a 2 hour flight but sometimes I need to get another box to leave as it gets so fucked up in that short time.
One time, for $70 AUD more (so about 30 US cents lol) I got an upgrade to business class, my bike arrived in ZQN literally better than what I dropped it off. When you fly pleb class they throw the bike from a bridge onto the plane lol
First time travelling internationally this summer (Canada to France). Here is my experience:
Riding an XL RAAW Madonna (1305mm wheelbase). I after deflating the fork and compressing (used a ski strap to hold things down), I could barely fit the frame in an older Evoc Bike Bag Pro. I was not able to use the frame to mount the front and rear axles and ended up making sure things like shoes, towels and extra clothes were around the fork and rear dropouts to prevent damage. I also had to deflate my tires to fit the wheel bags. I didn't take my rotors off, but made sure they were facing "in". I didn't have any kind of damage to the bag or bike. Still frustrating that no one really makes a bag that fits modern XL enduro/dh bikes, however my bag still worked with a bit of faffing.
Travelling TO France, Westjet had a 45kg (100lb) weight limit, although they didn't seem to care much. I stuffed a lot of stuff into the bag with the bike.
On the way HOME, I ran into issues. Was informed at the gate in Paris that French labour laws limit baggage weight to 32kg (I was definitely over). I ended up having to buy another duffle bag in the airport (don't ask me how overpriced it was) and then check it. Thankfully, they didn't charge me for the second checked bag or for the bike handling fee, so I think I got lucky. I absolutely recognize it was my fault for not double checking weight restrictions in France, but at the end of the day it all worked out.
New Dakine rolling bike bag worked for me recently and was able to get it under 50 pounds by removing a bunch of parts so didn't have to pay oversize fees. Rotors, chain, pedals, pump, tool... off and into a carry on. New bike is heavier so would probly have to take front brake and maybe seat and post off too for under 50 pounds packed.
Great advice to ensure you don't pay overage fees. My favorite move is to 3D print a stand-in for your shock at an appropriate eye-to-eye and hardware sizing, and chuck your shock in your carry on. On my DH bike it saves almost 2 lbs, and I actually reduced the eye-to-eye a bit to "sag" the suspension and reduce the size of the bike, improving the fit in the bag.
