After you have the models exported (done by the design engineer/drafter/whatever you call the CAD guy/girl), they need to be prepared to be 3D printed by positioning them in the slicer, sliced, a printing file needs to be generated and the models printed. With untested models there can be a few issues that you likely need to modify by hand after the fact.

So it's not an easy process. Companies charging ~200 € for custom geometry on welded aluminium frames hardly get their money's worth, the cost is likely offset by a bunch of standard frames.

As for what Athertons do, I've already commented that it's hard to imagine their process gives any meaningful profits considering all the steps and manual work it requires on standard bikes, let alone the custom geometry bikes.

EDIT: all of this is just guessing, I'm not privy to the process (other than what we saw in the dreambuild video), but it's based of my (limited?) knowledge of using CAD software and having parts 3D printed for prototype samples during development in automotive applications.
Since you'll require lugs that are different to everything else they have in their catalogue, presumably custom geometry would require at least some additional structural analysis and optimisation to validate the changes?

Edit: I suppose custom sizing is pretty close to the same thing

If its overbuilt enough and you're staying within a certain envelope, it "should be fine". Until it's not 🙂

You could also argue that different sizes should require different kinematics if we're nitpicking. Though a frame failing is a different topic than bobbing a bit more than a smaller size does.

Regarding sizing vs. Angles, there's no custom angle option then?

They are really making it difficult for themselves still, with customcustom non-standard Re:Aktiv suspension - and bragging about it. 210 Trunnion... Hopefully it is possible to De:Aktiv these as well with a proper shock and spacers

We had so many thru shaft failures, Trek started sending out standard shocks as replacements (and no spares for 6 months).

160 on the fuel ex? I know there's lots of talk of inflation lately, but if this isn't hyper inflation, what is?

Pepeprridge farm remembers when the fuel ex platform was 120 mm front and back...

Just saw Brendog on what I believe is the new Genius. It looks a lot like the bold trail bike but I think the shock is hidden in the seat tube, and by the size of it a piggyback shock might fit. The frame is black and green.

Almost like every bike has just moved up a category - new Fuel (150?) is old Slash, new Top Fuel (130/120) is old Fuel, new Slash (170/160) is old Scratch. They just need to make a 'new' 100mm XC bike to replace the 'old' Top Fuel Wink though maybe that will be the new Supercaliber!

120 to 160 isn't really one category IMO...

As for the Genius, I think that had been more to less confirmed that all of them, including the Ransom, will have an internal shock.

Just because you work in a shop with some insider knowledge doesnt mean you should be a dick about it. But i guess thats what a small wage will give you.

All the talks regarding Yeti’s next lineup are about the 120, 140 and 160 models. What will happen to the current 165 (that Cascade Components turn to 170)? Will there be a new 180 model? What about a dh-rig? Their 303 models were sick machines, especially the last one was nuts when it was released.
