I 100% don't advocate this method, but I tend to find that using a drill (press the chuck into the inner race) to spin up a frame bearing that feels a little rough can work wonders and make it feel much smother. I normally pop the seals and flush out the old grease and renew once I've done that. Helps me extend the life of the bearings, I don't think they enjoy the small repetitive movement in pivots and spinning them up seems to help.

Replaced the bearings on my Tyee earlier this week, which I think were the factory acros oned so 4-5 years-ish. Only two sizes which werent hard to find in aftermarket Max options. Two out of 8 had to be pressed out of the carbon frame, god it's so unnerving i hate it Currently looking at getting a new short travel bike and bearing longevity/ease of replacement is definitely a factor as I ride in mud half of the year and will be buying used, so most warranties are out of the window. This may not always be the case, but a lifetime bearing warranty often brings an incentive for the manufacturer not to have to supply 20 sets of bearings per frame, so they design and spec better. Frames with bearings in linkages are my preference provided they are quality - not much point having bearings in linkages if the pivot axle is wearing a groove in your frame. You can put any fork you’d like on. This whole matching suspension concept is born out of some weird concern about how others will perceive you. Run whatever you like/ interests you and don’t worry about what others think of it.

Old man/ old eyes hack. If you have presbyopia( the loss of the ability for your eyes to focus on close objects) you most likely have your fix with you. Curl your index finger tightly until there is only a small gap. Bring this close to your eye and look through it at what you’re trying to focus on. This small aperture is the same thing a camera lens uses to increase depth of field. It’s not perfect, but it may get you by. I think a downtube experiences tension and compression, but I think for the majority of impacts its experiencing them as a compression event. That's part of the reason why roadbikes can have such tiny toptubes and still need such huge downtubes. I would agree with this. If they have excessive drag its likely the green plastic seal that seals the freehub to the hub body. They can be super annoying to install. Or there should be a washer/spacer that spaces the freehub off the bearing inside the hub body. I had a pro4 that had excessive drag and I had forgot to put that spacer in when I changed freehubs.

I always called the lower link on my Norco Range the 'scrotum' that would bang into things - but this - this needs a name. Looks like the carbon bit will extend outside of that 'special area' and be exposed when suspension is active. What a very special area.

Good questions! I had a great conversation with Kiran MacKinnon of Santa Cruz Bikes at Sea Otter (and it should be published as a podcast at some point), and he said that because e-bike frames have to be so much stiffer than pedal bikes, taking the motor and battery out basically produces a bike that rides like a block of wood (i.e. overly stiff and harsh over bumps). Question(s) for the group at large that pops into my head when I see these pedal bike development mules that are ebikes, and based off of the various ebike to dh bike conversions that are a part of racing these days. Is there a future where pedal bikes either take on the form of ebikes, but with bb assemblies that bolt into the motor mounts? My newest dumb problem is that I got one of the new tr11 frames and they put the screws for the frame cable guides underneath the cables and it’s pretty delicate plastic. So you need a buddy to pull the cable out of the way super hard while he also holds the guide in place and you fight to get the tiny screw in with my fat fingers. Why they removed external routing ill never know.

Tire width has definitely changed, so bizarrely a 2.5" is not a 2.5". For starters, those old 26" tires of yesteryear were mounted to narrower rims (Mavic 521's were a 21mm inner width, compared to most rims these days that are 29 or 30mm), but most of the old tires were crazy undersized to boot. A 2.5" Assegai these days looks (visually, not scientifically) double the size of an old 26x2.5" DHF. In reality, the numbers are more like 64mm vs. 57mm mounted on the same size rim, but that's still a big difference. Here's a crazy fact: 2.5" translates...
