It's that time when decisions are supposed to be made about which mountain bike was the greatest of the year. Vital has announced such accolades in the past, and we've always believed in the bikes we've chosen whether based on performance, technology, price point or some combination of those attributes. As 2023 comes to a close, we've discussed the topic internally, figuring we'd pick a standout bike of the year. Bike of the year in 2023 is sort of like the Time Magazine cover that was a mirror. The real winner in 2023 was the consumer, with prices falling across the entire range of mountain bikes and performance (actually) plateauing the last few years. While this may be bad for companies, its incredibly good for the consumer who was often able to purchase at dang near shop-employee pricing from a myriad of companies. I raced EWS in Finale in 2017. Jesse Melamed broke his hand before the race. So I broke the same hand on the same special stage during the race. I guess we're spiritual brothers ever since.

Met Robin Williams in my local bike shop while building up my first official DH bike, a yellow/red Intense Uzzi DH. He was wowed & asked about it. Everyone else was in awe of him but I'm off in the head too & we hit it off & just babbled. He told me the rumours were true that he was really into bikes, that he'd been in disguise in the back of the USPS chase car feeding Lance & crew in feed zones.
