8/20/2025 9:50am Relating to your last point: The 26 to 29 change, people didn’t really understand how certain geometry aspects worked. Most notably was some brand’s insistence that handling performance was mostly or solely based on wheelbase. Hence the 29er version of bikes coming with a steeper head angle (and a messed up fc:rc ratio, thanks to the longer chain stays) than the 26 equivalent. With predictable results Now I hope designers are more used to the effects and consequences of changing wheel diameter.

8/19/2025 7:45am Double posting because it's a different topic ish There was some test (maybe on YouTube?) done a while ago by a Pirelli sponsored rider who found that a ~40mm tire with a gravel suspension fork was faster than a larger tire (50mm+) without suspension for gravel events (I believe it was done for Unbound). It does make me wonder if...

8/19/2025 7:42am Since it's not been mentioned here but Escape Collective has reported that the UCI are considering a ban on 32" wheels. This is different from the current rules for road (which give a maximum total circumference, which oddly is sometimes exceeded without issue) as the UCI looks to clamp down on MTB more than they previously have. That would certainly...

8/18/2025 7:31am Yeah, totally get this is n=1 of many and probably not representative of the whole picture. The data were from the paid version of Statista (published by 'Statista Research Department' based on April 2024 modelling. The trends may be way off but it was interesting to see some of the prior data. The worldwide bike market seemingly went up 1.5x...

8/18/2025 6:20am The issue with cycling in America is there is almost no quality infrastructure for it in vast majority of places. I could easily physically bike to work on regular bike. Could easily commute to any job I had in last 10 years on e-bike physically. There is even a bike trail for most of the distance. But the short sections from my home to the trail and the trail to work are so dangerous I’d never consider it for full time commuting. Even in Portland Oregon where there was somewhat decent investment in bike infrastructure I got hit 3 times...

8/18/2025 4:36am I became more interested in all of this business talk and then realized I have access to some forecasting/analytics data at work so did some digging and found some interesting things. These are all global projections from 2024 so could very well be wrong at this point. It's also global bike market stuff so not just enthusiast bikes or mountain...

8/18/2025 4:24am Just a note on Giant manufacturing bikes for other brands - they don't necessarily make all of a brand's bikes. IIRC, Giant made Trek's low end aluminum bikes (like kids bikes, entry level hybrids) but not their mid-high level frames (like the aluminum Fuel or Slash, or aluminum Domane road bike). Other brands may not be the same and could...

8/15/2025 6:36am I think Norco reducing frames goes back to what others have previously mentioned and lines up with how the new Trek Fuel is being positioned. Everyone is expecting their non-XC bikes to be able to ride anywhere (from local trails to DH) so they have to be made more robust, which increases weight, and then what is the realy difference...

7/21/2025 7:20pm Hey everyone, not mad at anyone in this thread (besides maybe myself). I clearly have ideas and a delivery style that probably isn’t ideal for a mountain bike forum. Robot wrote a genuinely great post (he’s a better writer than me), and I realized there was no way for me to counter it. Not because I didn’t have anything to say, but because I started turning into this (actual photo Tucker took of me this morning): Any frustration you see from me is with myself, not anyone else. I like friction. I like debate. What I don’t like is knowing...

6/22/2025 7:05pm An EXTREMELY simplified explanation of why video gets blurred: The more detail in an image, the more data is required to describe that image. There's a limit to how much data cameras can capture in real time, how much they can send in "real time," how much broadcasters can send in "real time," how much internet service providers can receive and send in "real time," and how much your TV provider can send in "real time." The downstream folks tell the upstream folks how much they can handle. The on-site broadcast is assembled in real-time and sent to the folks...

6/20/2025 4:06am I'm average-tall (185cm), more in legs than torso, and after a bike fit a few years ago was told to get 165mm cranks because of hip impingement (or at least 'shorter than 172.5mm', and 170 didn't feel like much of a difference). I figured 'long legs' would disprove this... Nope, 40.5cm ish tibia = 165mm cranks. Interesting. They felt a...

6/20/2025 4:02am On a more serious note, here’s an interesting tidbit from an article on Velo about Tadej Pogacar’s stubby little tour-winning 165mm cranks: "The study folks cite the most when it comes to crank arm length is this one from Martin & Spirduso . There, they compared maximum sprint power between sixteen trained cyclists, each using a range of crank arm lengths: 120, 145, 170, 195, and 220 mm. In short, the study found that the crank arm length with the highest output was a measly 145 mm, while the lowest power outputs were found at the extremes of their tests...

6/18/2025 7:57am How about Lobster or Shrimp links? Both are somewhat related to crabs and that's kind of what you look like when you ride an XC bike (hunched back to a low bar/stem. Just imagine the negative stems that will be on 32" XC race bikes... carcinization continues as Nino Schurter goes from GOAT to Lobster)

6/2/2025 7:08pm I can't remember if this was brought up here or on Escape Collective, but the Canyon - Amazon deal is supposed to be focused on entry level bikes. I don't know if there was a specific cut off (maybe $3000?), but I imagine AXS builds are not going to be sold on Amazon.
