4/24/2026 8:03am People said the same about Poland, but it really cut up and turned into a great track. This will probably shape up to be one of the most interesting races in modern DH. A new country, with a level playing field in terms of pit setup, on a track with more flat corners and tight tree line choice will mean we could see some dark horses really shine here. An unexpected good result at the first race of the season could really jumpstart the rest of their season and a career. That's what we all want, a cool story. Loic...

4/24/2026 5:49am I think the biggest unique thing about Surrons and the like is that they are near silent. This is what lets kids get away with all kinds of shenanigans. Older generations had dirt bikes but you'd hear that coming from a long way allowing quite a bit less tomfoolery in normal public places, like parks, greenbelts, trails, etc. Heck around here during Thanksgiving last year there were ongoing issues of young teens riding Surrons into a local grocery store! https://www.imfromdenver.com/trending/arvada-teens-ride-e-bikes-into-ki…

4/24/2026 5:48am In 4th or 5th grade my friend rode directly into the back of a parked car while telling me to watch out for cars parked in the bike lane. That doesn't have anything to do with the current regulatory environment, but it still makes me laugh when I think about it. (He was fine.) Regarding regulation, my prediction is that the regulatory landscape for e-bikes and related devices in the U.S. will become more fragmented and confusing over the next few years, not less. In part I base that on the observation that the current presidential administration is pretty openly...

4/23/2026 10:41am I know we talked about this earlier, but we weren’t completely sure it was RMU. I’ve now received an email from them with this picture, so we can confirm it is their bike. It looks like it’s launching on May 1st.

4/23/2026 10:39am Surron had a prominent presence at Sea Otter, and a number of kids were riding these e-motos (along with pit bikes) throughout the expo in ways that were disruptive and inconsiderate. I’m still developing my perspective on high-powered eMTBs (which I consider a separate thing), but it’s hard to ignore how often these machines seem to encourage poor behavior — or at least attract it. I often hear the argument that it’s better for kids to be outside on bikes (of any sort) than indoors glued to their phones. In principle, I agree. But increasingly, it feels as though the...

4/23/2026 10:38am I half wrote an essay before realising it was more of a rant; essentially I think the power wars risk breaking the social contract of responsible land use, where I live we have very small woods and they’re intensively used for recreation. The tacit agreement is that you’re allowed to do you there under your own power, no dirt bikes, no quads etc. If this is perceived to be broken because you can razz around on fire road climbs at 20mph then I reckon land managers will just ban bikes altogether because it would be too difficult to only ban...

4/23/2026 10:38am @jeff.brines, heres a bit of feedback/ encouragement. I believe the story on the clash of an escalating e-bike power war, the rise of the e-moto, the battle for land access, and how governments might seek to regulate it all has the potential to reach well beyond the our small niche here and into the broader media landscape. I believe you're the perfect person to tell the story. I think the topic influences everyone. I believe it's a story that extends well beyond the interest of mountain bikers and would engage a large swath of the thinking public. Particularly the topic...

4/23/2026 6:05am Good questions! I had a great conversation with Kiran MacKinnon of Santa Cruz Bikes at Sea Otter (and it should be published as a podcast at some point), and he said that because e-bike frames have to be so much stiffer than pedal bikes, taking the motor and battery out basically produces a bike that rides like a block of wood (i.e. overly stiff and harsh over bumps). That doesn't mean that an e-bike with the motor removed is unridable (i.e. Martin Maes racing DH on the e-Wild frame as a development project for the new Rallon DH bike), but...

4/23/2026 6:05am No, the Scott engineers are furious because Specialized added so many new links but didn't seal them inside the frame. They're yelling at their screen right now, "Just make it look like a pregnant whale! It's so easy!"

4/23/2026 6:04am Question(s) for the group at large that pops into my head when I see these pedal bike development mules that are ebikes, and based off of the various ebike to dh bike conversions that are a part of racing these days. Is there a future where pedal bikes either take on the form of ebikes, but with bb assemblies that bolt into the motor mounts? Is or would that potentially be a problem for the various groups of consumers? The average consumer vs the die hard vs tip of the spear of performance chasers? Do we think that would create...
