If we compare the new horst link tallboy with the Allied Fitz, Forbidden Reya and Transition Smuggler, there a few difference: Tallboy is the only bike using a trunion shock most likely a 185x50, Smuggler and Fitz use a normal 210x50 shock and Reya use a 190x45 shock. So Reya most likely have a higher starting leverage ratio that could limit heavier rider that are getting close to the shock max pressure. Reya, Smuggler and most likely Tallboy use double bearing setup at the chainstay. Santa Cruz does the same for the Bullit and Vala. Allied Fitz has no exploded...

I’d love to see a shoot out of trail bikes using the same linkage designs. It would really interesting to start to dig a bit deeper as to what sets them apart - quality control, kinematics, maintenance, etc etc.

I’m not pro-Evil but dude this is like bringing up the Pinto as a reason not to get a new Ford. There may be plenty of relevant and current reasons but this isn’t one.

Long time lurker, first time poster here. For some background I’m an aerospace composites engineer and spent several years in Advanced Product Development with an emphasis on environmentally friendly materials. There’s so much to get into on this topic and if folks are interested I’d love to start a dedicated thread on materials and environmental impacts. The TLDR is, carbon fiber as a green product on its own is a fallacy. The raw fiber production may result in a certain level of carbon sequestering, but the process is still so energy intensive I wouldn’t call it an environmental positive. As...

Gas Gas had the right idea with the moto-inspired replaceable plastics kits for their ECC ebikes. How many carbon frames become landfill waste from rock strikes or crashes where a sacrificial "fairing" could have taken the blow? If the industry wants to improve durability, this is the right place.

The vast majority of the advancement of continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic materials is centered around aerospace. Carbon fiber reinforced bikes (mainly epoxy based) have "veered away" from aero materials - their processes and needs have evolved and are now somewhat different. So, thermoplastic composites (TPC's) have not been as targeted towards bikes. If you look at material test data, there are TPC's with similar or even better performance (strength/stiffness vs weight) than epoxy/CF being used now in bike parts (especially a property called "facture toughness"). But, these highest performing TPC's are higher priced in general, higher processing temp, and...

Nico - 10 CONSECUTIVE World Champs victories. 3 Junion World Champs 7 consecutive Elite World Champs. 1992-2002 Undefeated in that race. Having come from that very first generation of downhill bikes, venues & formats...it's still utterly mind blowing. Courses had HUGE pedaling sections. Tons of races on slick grass. Times could be up to 6 minutes on track for top 5. But the greatest feat was getting the equipment of those eras to the bottom of the track as the FASTEST on track. Everything we rode from 92-2002 was still fragile & courses were evolving faster than the bikes. His...

I only have 1 ride on the Romy so can't tell you how it fully is, but visually it is a very different tire than the other three. It compares more to a Dissector or Xynotol. Visually it seems like a fast rolling tire for harder conditions and may not be where you want to prioritize. Looks like a great mid travel trail bike Colorado tire if it holds up for me tbh. I have the Tacky Chan on the front, and it is much more aggressive tire that would be closer to those others. I was a bit surprised...
