I have a '23 Smuggler and every time I get that "new bike" itch I end up asking myself why? The Smuggler isn't perfect but it's so damn good I can't convince myself a new bike is worth it (and I'm pretty darn good at finding reasons to justify a new bike). I suspect a lot of folks are in a similar situation...

I thought the Spot interview was interesting. What he said made sense--it's a choice. It doesn't cost more to manufacture. It does change how the bike rides, which is something to consider. Some builders, Spot and Pivot for example, still believe in designs that incorporate a short CS.
Some interesting thoughts from the guys at Spot about chainstay length in a podcast about their new bike on the Bikes & Big Ideas podcast with Simon Stewart. https://blisterreview.com/podcasts/spots-ryan-palmer-on-their-new-light… Geometry talk starts around 29 minutes in but the whole podcast is a great listen! Side note: I really dig both Simon's episodes and David Golay's episodes of the Bikes & Big Ideas podcast. I know the pacing of the speech in the David-hosted episodes is challenging for some folks but if you can hang with those episodes there's a ton of cool info and cool people to learn from/about!

A higher rise bar usually moves your hands higher up directly vertically while adding spacers does it along the steering axis. In short, adding spacers shortens the reach, high rise bars don't change it.

Hey Matt, I rode and wrote about the Tallboy HERE. After only having two days on the bike now, my suspicion is that it's not really going to play that nicely with coil shocks. Ie: the beginning and ending lev ratio, combined with the amount of shock stroke won't offer the support a coil spring requires, nor the distance needed to control the shock with the lower overall progression rate. Like, you might get away with this lev rate on a 60/65mm+ stroke shock as there's more time to control the suspension movement with compression. Hopefully that makes sense? If...

I'm not saying they are in danger of takeover, just that they have gone from remarkable profits (5.3B Euro for 2024) to slim profits (90M Euro for 2025) in short time. They just took a 2.7B Euro write-down and cut 500 jobs. Oof.

Trust me, Porsche isn't in financial trouble. Like, not even remotely. They just strategically like to appear as if they are, for political- and lobbying reasons. Only slightly related rant: The automotive industry in Germany on a wider scale is once again trying to apply political pressure in order to achieve massive tax cuts, subsidies and erode labour protection laws. It's the same old story; They're feigning financial trouble and mass job insecurity as a bargaining tool for political leverage. And yes, our automotive sector is so large and influential that they can sort-of hold the entire country hostage until...

This. Porsche is in trouble right now. They just sold off their Bugatti-Rimac stake, and they are closing down the IC Macan. Their EV investments are not paying off, with US and China EV sales doing poorly.

UCI said no no for Jumbo Visma, they were using the KAPS (Kinetic Air Pressure System) made by Gravaa.

For the XL, it’s decent changes. The chainstay gets increased by size, so no longer 435 on XL. Also the reach is up 5-10mm with almost 20mm for stack. Not crazy but if I had to buy an XL E8 or 9, I’d prefer the new numbers.

800 euro for the pair. No rotors. Also the new demo launch must be imminent, I presume these will be included in at least the top level build spec.

New Epic 9 will be crazy light in S Works guise. No 32", no swat box. Very racy--Not sure about trims and rollout availability. Product cycle on the Epic 8 (spring 2024) does seem a little short. Perhaps they decided to release early based on 32" future XC bikes?

aaaaaand mountain biking shines brightly again. nskerb and veefour: you’ve just cut my screen time short for the day, so thanks in a way…does anyone here watch the YouTuber MTB Alan? He bailed on our hobby recently, hard to argue against any of his points. What assholes we are.

I went with Onyx hook flange, heavy, but amazing. I’m absolutely sold on them, genuinely feel faster and the silence is beautiful.

Same here, and I'm a fan, they feel amazing. I had mine laced w/ standard (j-bend) hubs because I was worried about...something? Next set I get I'll go w/ hook-flange hubs.
