Which setup was that again? I rode production Mattocs between 7 and 12 years ago. I ran them on 3 dfiferent bikes and they all needed different setup due to geometry differences.
How's the balance on the bike? If the back end is comparatively soft it can end up rocking your weight back and unloading the fork. Which makes it difficult to get full travel. The carpark bounce tests are very good at exposing if one end is soggy or too firm. Wind off your damping so it has less effect first.

I just had one, very brief ride on the Simons.Lab Zeta in my Intend Edge - thought I’d do a VERY brief ride report. I’m 170 lbs, on a Spec Stumpy 15 with CC link 27.5”. I had to up my air pressure quite a bit given the damper leg is no longer sealed. My recommended settings were HSC -4, LSC -4, HSR -4, LSR -9. My Edge steerer is unfortunately really short, so when I removed my Shockcraft Mezzer Stage 2 (which I LOVE), I had to lower my stem 12 mm, so that colors my review a bit...

There's a tradeoff for stability vs suspension. Anti-Rise uses the wheel/brake dragging to keep the back of the bike down. The less of that goes on the more active (less hindered) the suspension is. Some people would get scared on a bike that's free to move all the time. Like everyone was scared of suspension moving in the 90's.

my post about the charger 2.1 swap somehow disapeard / got deleted (???) but nevermind, thanks for the tip. tossed in a charger 2.1 in the new zeb. feels way smoother AND more supportive. only downside: i can hear the oil squishing. but that's it so far. thanks for your help @Dougal - SC

Here's another example of a damper that switches ports in/out for damping adjustment. This is from a Koni gas/hydraulic 4wd shock: I've played around with designs to try and fit it into a bike damper, but it's difficult to downsize. You can see @SIMONS.LAB have put a lot of work into that, moving the return path to another tube definitely...

It's probably not the HSC circuit (that beehive shaped choke) but rather the preloaded basevalve spiking as the shims pop open. The only fix is to replace the main piston with a flat one and reshim to suit. There are also other changes to make to fix the harshness and support issues besides the preloaded main piston.

The key difference is where the main restriction actually comes from. With something like the Charger 3, the flow path leading to the shim stack is restricted, so that restriction effectively sits in series with the shim stack. With the ZETA Tune Adjuster, the ports and the fluid paths leading to them are sized so that the shim stack itself remains the main restriction in the flow path. There are always open ports, and the ports themselves are non-restrictive until the flow reaches the shim stack opening. First up, thank you to the Vital team for presenting our product here! Since a few questions came up, I wanted to chime in and clarify a bit what we mean by the Tune Adjusters. As @Slavid666 analyzed pretty much spot-on, the High-Speed Tune Adjuster changes the port configuration underneath a non-preloaded tapered shim stack. With each adjuster position, one additional port is closed off, changing the hydraulically loaded area of the stack.
