Given the plethora of takes in this thread, I am wondering what people think is the best value prop for a drivetrain? I like XT because it is crisp, wear items and breakable items are cheaper than sram counterparts, and the clutch is rebuildable. The only downside I have heard is the durability but I haven't broken one in a...

My little experience with transmission and Eagle 90 is that I far and away prefer the way eagle 90 shifts, but I have a gripe with how they keep the derailleur from going into the spokes with no limit screws, that being that the cage contacts the largest cog on the cassette. It's a little thing, but why design it that way over just building a limiter into the parallelogram? Doest even need to be adjustable, just keep it from touching the cassette. I would still take SHIMANO mechanical over eagle 90 if I was custom building a bike, but...

Fastest shift in the west is still the ol' trusty 11 Speed XT. Double gear downshift, crispy leaver feel, textured lever and can bend it pretty hard before it starts to shift poorly (unlike eagle or shimano 12 speed, which does good but could be better). I find that Transmission is a 180 stright into oncoming traffic in terms of progress, between the narrow-wide cassette, ridiculously massive derailleur, absurd price tag, and last but not least... probably one of the worse mtb inventions of the past 20 years, the UDH. Before the invention of UDH's, hangers were a lot smaller...

Actually, it is most likely Frameworks paying Asa.. However, that money is coming from the team sponsors. Back it the day when I was working in the warehouse at Diamondback, I heard a story of one of the top team riders demanding that they change some of the team sponsors to products he wanted to ride.. The head of marketing told him, "Those team sponsors are responsible for 75% of your paycheck..."

Agreed, but I assume Loic makes a shit ton from Spesh before Red Bull money even enters the equation. It is this interplay that I am interested in: how does Asa get compensated compared from his team vs RB and how does that ratio compare to Jackson or Loic. I imagine Ronan and his smaller team is a different story...

Do you think he is getting the 1-1.5 mil that the other sites' survey says top Elite racers make? Where does that come from? It is a simple math problem and Frameworks' limited releases and YouTube views don't make those numbers feasible. I hope Fox et al is footing the bill to get him close to what the top dogs...

I really doubt Neko would feel comfortable paying him under market too. I think your theory of Neko getting everyone to pay up because of the opportunity at hand is correct.

But mountain biking and professional athletics more broadly is by definition playing a short game of cash. Asa has only 10-15 years to make money after which he has to transition to something else, a prospect many athletes struggle with. Moreover the bike industry as a whole struggling compounds this. This is why if I were in his circle, I...

Call me cynical but my guess is after some superb performances this season and a couple of elite World cups wins Asa will move to Specialized and FrameWorks will receive a huge fee to release him from his contract

When Asa signed two years ago, I thought for sure they could only afford him for his junior years. I was taken aback when he signed for a couple years of elite today. Think of that, a sure perennial World Cup contender who can backflip, ride rampage chutes, and nearly win Hardline as a minor will be racing for a...

Every time I start thinking about a USD fork, I look at where the scratches and dings are on my fork lowers and realize they would be a problem on an USD fork. They do look cool though.

Is that not a touch disingenuous given that tariffs are applied on wholesale, which for soft goods would be far less? Not defending tariffs and I understand 7mesh scaling back their discounts but the effect is not as dire as they are claiming.

I originally posted a longer comment here but deleted it it read too much like a blog post, and I figured most folks wouldn't be into it. Still, I stand by the analysis, so if anyone’s curious (or wants to subject themselves to it), you can read it here: https://jeffbrines.com/2025/04/17/why-did-revel-maybe-go-bankrupt/ For context: $8M at 8% interest is $640K annually. That’s a serious cost (even if its a "spike" in the debt due to inventory or other reasons)—especially if you're carrying ~30 employees spread across continents. Even assuming $2K in gross profit per bike (which they likely weren’t making), you’d need...
