We started our ‘Bikes: Unaffiliated” podcast to create a space for conversation with bikes as a common thread. Including our passionate Vital community was always a goal for the podcast. Vital is an independent media source, and if you’re reading this, you are a part of what we create. This forum thread is your way to be a part of our (mostly) weekly show.
You’re invited to:
- Hit us with topics you’d like discussed in the future
- Questions you want answered during shows
- Leave your two cents about topics we’ve discussed
We’ll also do our best to drop a comment about upcoming topics so you can ask questions. Thanks for listening!
Here are the first three episodes if you missed them!

Sweet! I mentioned this in another post, repeating it here: I really enjoyed Troyden talking through all the steps/details involved in getting the Crestline frames into production. That whole side if things is a bit of a black box to me and it was really cool to learn a bit more about it.
I'd love a multi-segment deep dive on it, especially on weird/unexpected details (like Troyden figuring out one particular production line in the factory turned out a better product than the others, and why that was); stuff you can only learn from experience.
New episode is live!
Was listening to the most recent episode and wanted to share a silly unique idea you guys might have fun chatting about for a few minutes. This idea was inspired by a recent suspension service, leading to an aroma that didnt wash out of my clothing fully and followed me around all day. Luckily suspension oil isnt the most foul smell out there so it could have been worse haha.
But mtb can be smelly, forests have smells, the bike shop has smells, the races have smells. Be it rubber, suspension oil, grease, a fresh forest in the morning, 2 stroke chainsaw exhaust or burning brake rotors; what are your guys' favorite smells in MTB? Least favorite smells in MTB? Are there any aromas that bring back old memories.
Yeah dudes if you haven’t been on the period cramp zapper you should.
Yo boys! Let’s see if I can convey this topic correctly… so us MTB nerds like to outfit out bikes and modify them from stock. Whether it be a complete frame up build or buying a complete and transforming it into your own creation. It’s definitely a unique trait that we have. I’m wondering what else does this carry over into for you guys? For example I can’t keep my truck “stock”, every truck I buy I HAVE to alter the suspension, wheels, tires etc to suit my liking and achieve a certain look to make it stand out from the rest. Same goes with my motorcycles, I really enjoy tinkering with them and transforming them into something that you don’t see everyday.
So other than your bicycles what else do you nerd out on and HAVE to customize?
-Yuroshek
My "I'm going to keep it stock" car now has wider tires, thicker sway bars (man those were a pain in the rear to install),catch can, Berry's paddle shifters, tinted windows (that barely counts as modification), and I'm shopping for wheels.
That reminds me, I need to sell the set of wheels I have in the basement from my previous car.
Its definitely a thing. Very hard not to customise any vehicels. I bought a nice mtb before christmas, told the wife that this one is perfect as it comes… and here i am, after replacing the dropper i now shop for a new set of brakes. I didnt have the courage yet to confess that there might be a new shock laying around that happens to bolt on the new bike straight away… im up for any advices..
fresh split cedar and the forest after rain
I love the smell of a dusty redwood forest in the summer. I may be in the minority in that my favorite riding conditions are the dry summer months.
Re the discussion about Cam McCaul getting cut by Trek, the pro road team recently gave a career contract to Mads Pederson so it's not a new idea and Cam seems like a no-brainer for a similar offer: https://racing.trekbikes.com/stories/lidl-trek/pedersen-forever
The smells of these boring ass SLO trails may be the only reason I’m still riding them. Sage and especially eucalyptus, they can smell like a spa! When the hills are wet and activated (ayo) it’s unreal.
I’m a sucker for tri-flow, that’s my favorite workshop smell. Simple Green and kerosene.
NOT old fork oil.
Excellent topic.
Time to get in on this thread...
SD SX was definitely hot!
Just came to say "well, actually...."
What did happen to plus tires?
2.6 became a normal size...
Nobody remembers. 😂
New 32" episode dropped two days ago, but YouTube and site article are now live!

If you want to hear more on 32, Bikes and Big Ideas talks forks and wheels with the guys from Manitou and Reynolds..
Spotify link..
Was just about to post this but figured I'd check the comments first.
Good podcast! Bikes and Big Ideas is always a good listen!
This is a question for the Pod, I’ve noticed a few times during the chats that you mention alternate media platforms, including the discussion in the recent pod about press camps and knowing most of the crowd you’d be riding with. Which had me wondering.. is there much communication between media outlets discussing products behind the scenes ? Bouncing ideas off one another about products or reaffirming ideas regarding product set ups, issues, or blatant confusion with a product’s intentions? And I guess another things to expand on this topic of product reviews could be how you maintain objectiveness and try to eliminate your own bias from product reviews etc.
I dig this question and am gonna save it for a future pod to chat about!
And on that note, we aren't recording this week or next. I'm going to be traveling so unless Lars or Spomer feel extra motivated to chat we will see everyone in Feb.
I have a Friday coffee group, and one of our members is an engineer… so I had to break out this joke. It’s one of those that kind of depends on delivery. Sadly, I butchered it but everyone still got a kick out of it.
NZ is paradise, have fun.
I wonder if Manitou is having financial problems? They have been sold out of forks and shocks in popular sizes since late spring/ early summer of last year.
The Bikes and Big ideas podcast is in my playlist.
I want to put my hand up in shame and echo Jason's story about buying the wrong tyres. After the Continental hype when the Irish boys went 1-2 in Snowshoe, I figured I'd try them out without doing any research. I bought an Argotal, in trail casing with "endurance" compound... That tyre has no right to even exist, I can't think of any scenario I would want a very aggressive cut spike in a downright hard compound and incredibly flimsy sidewalls despite quite high weight.
