traildog Added a comment about feature Vital MTB's The Inside Line Podcast - Episode 10, Elayna Caldwell, Brand Director of MTB at SRAM
5/10/2017 8:22pm Would be interesting to hear if she thought there were brands who do benefit from the "lifestyle" marketing in EWS about riders "just having fun". Totally agree that it can be annoying, even from a fan standpoint, i just always figured that was a deliberate brand strategy rather than something the riders were driving

i keep hearing this argument, but are they really straightening out the tracks? aside from leogang which could never replace schladming, what track on the WC circuit doesn't reward cornering skill? i know MSA had the controversial section last year, but that seemed like a random experiment and half the riders who aren't stoked on 29ers seemed to LOVE that wide open section. some didn't. MSA had 50mph straight-aways in 1999/2000 ( according to trans continental headliners) and no one complained. a good test would be garbanzo at crankworx if anyone runs 29ers there (i know, not a WC).

5/5/2017 7:26am Nobody with any power here actually cares about the sanctity of racing. They care about the show. Shows need drama... and here you go.

5/5/2017 7:24am That's the worst point that keeps cropping up. The exact same thing happens whenever a new innovation or improvement hits the circuit - carbon frames and components, somebody develops a glue-like tyre compound, somebody develops a super controlled damper (that smooths out terrain just like a 29er wheel btw). Etc etc, eventually everyone develops (copies) their own carbon frame, their own tyre, their own dampers and everyone's back on the same page...until the next thing comes along. It's precisely how competition drives innovation. Besides that your (and Brendan's and Loic's) argument assumes that a 29er wheel will be faster and...

5/5/2017 7:14am I think part of the reason for all the frustration about wheel size and standards evolution is due to the past 20+ years of stagnation, followed by rapid progression. The bike I started riding on in 198? Was not different from my last hard tail which was in 2000. Then in 2000ish I got a Turner XCE which was quickly warrantied for a Horst Link 5 Spot. Then I kept that bike until the Santa Cruz TBLT came out. I had wanted to get something newer and fresher, but there was not a better trail bike released between the early...

5/5/2017 7:13am Food for thought, Greg C always seems to crush tight, twisty, awkward EWS aboard a 29" steed. The old school "29" bikes can't corner in tight stuff" belief is sort of a theory from yesteryear being perpetuated forward IMO. Bikes are already long and slack as hell. That, more than anything, is going to impact its ability in the mega tight stuff. My opinion anyway...

5/2/2017 8:02am agreed, but I also think these guys were pretty candid about not being concerned with the "fairness" of new tech but rather the potential for the industry to self-destruct through too many options. it's the same argument for the tire width restrictions in CX- not that a wider selection of tires isn't beneficial, but that the small teams simply can't afford to have all the options glued up at once, so regulation is necessary to create a level playing field. I'm not particularly passionate either way, but do think there's got to be a balance between showcasing R&D while also...

4/27/2017 1:39pm but if 29ers are faster over the same rough technical tracks, why is that less exciting? the comment field assumption of a relationship between 29ers and tracks flattening out is purely hypothetical.

3/15/2017 2:35pm For real, 25-26lbs with 850g tires and a non-piggyback shock maybe? Though i think honestly $1/gram is kind of the going rate. Carbon wheels won't get you anywhere close to that. Handlebars or cranksets possibly.

Yes, i'll second this; it's so refreshing to see actual linkage analysis published in bike reviews. Even though Linkage is cheap and easy to use for interested consumers, it's important to me that the reviewers understand what's actually going on when writing this stuff. You guys are killing it!

traildog Added a reply to XT- SLX, Magura Mt2 brakes?
2/17/2017 5:24pm The maguras have injection molded plastic lever bodies/master cylinders. High-end ones like mt8 have a lot of carbon mixed into the plastic, but the low end ones like MT2 look like standard gf30 nylon. They are super light and work well enough, though you do see them break here and there. Also seem to need a bleed more often.
