Remember when XTR hubs laced to 517s was the hot shit wheelbuild? And suddenly alloy nipples came out and you could get some fancy looking shits? And your shop would handbuild them and it'd be like 600 bucks? And then Crossmax and Deemax wheels came out and they were like $800 and everyone though that was really fucking expensive. Now we get excited when wheels only cost 2 grand. And get off my lawn!

Agreed with Norco Dude. Maxxgrip is fine as a rear tire but way too hard a compound to run as a front tire where it's slippery. [Edit: yes that was a typo, I meant to say MaxxTerra sucks as a front tire]

you obviously don't ride east coast very much. in the wet, there is a PROFOUND difference in maxxx grip vs maxxx terra. maxxx terra is like ice. when it's dry i think the differences are negligible. i actually just went to a continental der baron to finally get more front end traction when it's wet.

There are components and designs that give a real performance advantage. Carbon fiber is not one of them. Weight is clearly not a major concern for downhill racers in 2019, otherwise they wouldn't willfully be putting 300 gram pool noodles in their tires and riding aluminum parts.

In the butchers he was running 2.3. He said he prefers a narrower tire because it forces him to be more precise with his line choices. Not sure on the Maxxis widths.

I think the part that sucks is paying $600-1000 more for a carbon frame with no benefit. If you add up carbon handlebars, wheels, and cranks, too, you’re at about $2500-3000 extra for no benefit. And when I say “no benefit,” I mean to say World Cup guys are the biggest tweakers out there, and Loic would not be riding aluminum if he thought it was slower.
