Was watching the recap videos and wow, Amaury's mistake in the first split must have cost him at least 1-2 seconds? Maybe more like 3-5 seconds given the loss of momentum and how he drops down to the slower low line as he comes out of the woods? Notice in the POV video that he bobbles again coming out of woods before dropping to the lower line, to me he lost more momentum doing that than unclipping in the third person view. What do you guys think?

Nah, you could see on the footage he jumped trackside of the pole and left it swaying after he passed it, so I'd say he clipped the pole whilst staying within the tape rather than jumping the tape.

Even if he did jump the tape, what would be the verdict there? You have to keep within the poles if I remember correctly, i.e. going through the tape you have to come back inside the same pole/tree the tape is attached to. If you jump over a pole... Well technically you're inside the pole Tongue

EDIT: yep, jumped over it, bonking it. It's even marked as a special moment in the replay Smile
All good if you ask me given some other pole&tape jobs on other tracks.

Greg had straight up gapped the tape to straighten a corner before on the live feed. Pretty sure it was lousa he and luca did it most recently but may be getting which race it was jumbled. I think in order to dq you have to break the tape or ride off the course.

No, as long as you go back on course between the same two poles you went off (i.e. not going around a pole) you're OK.

We were of course spoilt to have such good coverage the last few years. Last year we lost EWS slideshows and I barely followed the series. Luckily for DH we have videos and live stream.
Has the industry evolved and photogs are making money elsewhere? Fair enough if so.

I know this is kind of off-topic, but wanted again to share the appreciation for the vital slideshow. You inspired me (a proper millennial with short attention span) to re-think the way I consume content, and provided a level of depth and quality of both images and interviews that I will really miss.

Thanks to the whole team for the amazing stuff, Littermag/Vital remains a sanctuary.

I would agree w/ this. One of my all time favorite vital content pieces were the slideshows. IMO the EWS was arguably better than the DH. Loved having Sven in the guys do the voiceovers. Sad day...I guess you can't argue w/ poor viewership. Ugh.

That's what I was saying to him. With the pole leaning off track, you wouldn't risk getting tangled and coming off

As I said in the tech thread, it's really disappointing that the IFR guys got their bike ridiculously late. This has been a project in the works since last summer (really before that) and they don't get bikes until a couple weeks before the season?? Sorry to be harsh, but that's pathetic for a company who has inhouse frame-building capabilities. You can't be competitive at this level with a couple weeks on a bike. Look at Luca, Laurie, etc. Everyone giving them props for doing so well on a 'new bike' and they've had those bikes for 3-4 months.

Also, the interview with Jeff, on the other site... Jeff talking about how it's a work in progress and they'll be racing prototypes throughout the season because that's core "Intense" as a brand. Ummm, this is 2022, no other top riders are trying out prototype bikes all season long and tinkering. Gwin is in the last couple years of his career and he's forced to be testing out prototype bikes all year after a couple years of injuries and bikes/tires that held him back. Pretty bummer way to close out his career. Here's to hoping they can get the bike dialed in the next 6 weeks and this was just a bump in the road. I give DAK a lot of credit for jumping on this bike and posting a very solid result. And congrats to top American Luca!

Regarding the link itself... As soon as pics of the Intense HP bike showed up, all the online engineers pointed out that the rocker would be super flexy. The guys probably noticed the flex immediately in Windrock during testing and had Jeff machine solid/beefy ones that got anodized and express shipped to Lourdes.

You could also say it was the move to Specialized during his prime that stopped him being GOAT. He was untouchable on Trek, then jumped on a bike that didn't suit him, and spent a 1-2 seasons developing prototype links, front triangles, then a whole new bike that finally got him back to winning ways.

His move to YT was a much more successful change. He immediately felt at home on that bike and the Gwinner was back to dominating ways. He was also a clear #1 at that team and built the team around him.

Don't be too quick to write the guy off. He clearly knows how to develop a race winning bike, and whilst IFR likely don't have the R&D budget of the top brands, Dak's result showed that this bike is capable. By their own admittance, their bike program is a bit late, but then the Lourdes uplift/practise situation was a shitshow. I'm sure he expected more time on the bike before the race (then he had a nasty crash). It's pretty much impossible to simulate WC racing conditions outside of a WC.

Give Aaron a dry, crash free WC weekend and I'm expecting him to be back in the mix. He's getting older but you don't just forget how to win races. We have often seen in this sport how a string of good results often follow one good result. It's as much a mental game as anything else.

And speaking of GOAT's. I'll stick my neck out and say that Minnaar being on the same team and developing one bike for the last 14 years has contributed to him being so consistent and competitive right up to the ripe old age of 40.

On YT, it was Martin Whitely as owner and manager right? So Gwin was just having to focus on training, recovery, racing right? I guess the Onza and TRP product dev too in that era. With IFR he's team owner correct? So must be a lot more work. Hard to tell from photos/videos but their setup looks a bit more basic in terms of staff/resources than YT and obviously the big teams like Trek, Specialized, Canyon and Commencal. Thinking about stuff like trainers/massage, cooks, logistics etc.

YT is Europe based, Intense is US based. They likely don't have a proper EU base/setup (yet...).

Great race summary video that captures the atmosphere well. I think a lot of people (myself included) are going to really miss Red Bull producing the series next year. For anyone that follows road racing, does Discovery have any decent coverage outside of the actual races?
