pumping is absolutely less effective than on non-HPP. In thinking back now, i actually stopped using pumping as a strategy, and am only slowly doing it more now - years later. My strategy became - work really hard to get up to speed, and then do everything to maintain (eg minimal braking, large apex on turns, send all jumps to flat lol)

I think HPP bikes would be a dog to pump because the rear wheel doesn't want to stay in the same place as you pump. Hardtails pump better than full-suspension bikes, and I feel like a HPP bike would pump even worse. I don't think most beginner and intermediate riders would notice this because I think most beginners and intermediates are just hanging on to survive aggressive trails, but when you want to go real fast you have to pump everything. This would obviously be less of a factor on steeper and rougher trails, though.

I think people are tripping because they're looking at the frame-only price with a Push or EXT shock, but that's not really an apples-to-apples comparison. Frame-only for a Megatower is $3400 with a Fox X2, which is basically the same thing as $3500 for the Dreadnought with an X2. The price is high, but it's not out of sync with the industry.

For pricing - it's not that bad if you've looked at pricing lately - it's creeping up with Covid and the shipping quagmires. A Rocky Altitude is $3860, and a Yeti SB150 is $3900. This bike ain't cheap, but for a small brand, and given the complexity and presumed small volumes, I'd say it's fair. Anyway, there are loads of good budget options out there if that's more your flavor.

440 reach on the small? Bikes are getting HUGE. Looks good regardless.

I think they might be hinting at a massive transition from a bike company to a dried insect wholesaler to feed pet reptiles, hence the beetle photo.

Great question, D(C). Such a good question I'd love to address it in next month's advice column instead of here in the comments so I can give a more thoughtful response. Can you send this question to advice@vitalmtb.com with your first name included? If your question is chosen by our expert panel of question-choosers you'll get a Vital T-shirt and sticker pack.

The scary part isn't the distance when I watch it. The room for zero error is though. Damn near flat ground surrounding that mini-kick lander. If he misses the lip, I don't even know if he'd BOUNCE. Just stick straight into ground bone by bone.

Yes we do. We occasionally go back and put them together again. But bikes and trails are meant to be ridden.

One the nice perks of the Ibis bars with threaded inserts. Less time spent swapping and experimenting when setting up customers. It’s generally pretty obvious when a person will need narrower than 750 (ie small person). Otherwise people can cut the alloy inserts and play with various widths until they’re happy, and not stress about cutting a bar too narrow. Got a bin full of the inserts, so it’s never a concern to swap some out to help customers.

Indeed. Cool that he's running a large, too. 470mm reach vs. 500 on the XL. It's a super interesting bike check all around. Jack and I are a similar height and weight, and we're both running 180mm Zeb's with 70 psi. The only difference is he's running 3 tokens and I'm running zero. Damn.

I hope many see this. I see SO many people running bars too wide on their bikes. Probably the most common bike fitment mistake I see, maybe second only to brake levers to close to grips by beginners.
