11/7/2019 9:18am Does it have a motor? Is it a 'cycle"? Then?... Unless you're disabled or over 70 yrs old, stop being a lazy fat-ass and pedal a bike without a motor on non-motorized trails. If you want a motor, get a dirtbike. I do both. Both are mega-fun. But let's not jeopardize trail access of MTB by riding MOTORCYCLES on trails with hikers, runners, old people, dogs, blah, blah.

11/7/2019 9:16am A case can be made either way depending on the marketing strategy. Considering E-bikes are almost entirely being sold by mountain bike companies, with current and aspiring mountain bikers as the sales demographic, they are marketed as bikes. I'm sure if E-bikes were being sold by motorbike companies with current, and aspiring moto demographics as the sales target, they would be marketed as motorbikes. As far as I'm concerned there's no ambiguity. Motor+bike=motorbike. Just imagine if every pedal stroke a tiny gas engine sent a pulse of power to the rear wheel. Do you think the industry could get away...

11/7/2019 9:15am Would you please tell me what differentiates a mountain bike from a dirt bike, i.e. at what point does a bicycle become a motorcycle? I’m not necessarily opposed to ebikes but the fact that they have a motor, tiny or large, makes them a motorcycle of some sort and it’s an incorrect categorization to include them with bicycles. Edit 1.1: Asking @yetimike2019 and anyone else that thinks ebikes are mountain bikes as this is something I have a hard time wrapping my head around.

11/7/2019 9:14am A bike that turns everyone into Nino Schurter on climbs, allows beginners access to the highest (often rowdiest) trails and doubles the distance/trail degradation they can do in the same time is a completely different sport. Yes I’ve ridden a couple. My comments stand.

11/7/2019 9:14am It sounds like we agree on pretty much everything here. We both feel that eMTB's are not as fun as regular MTB's. You own one but don't ride it very often. People should be allowed to have fun in whatever way they want and so on. *high-five* The only comparisons I made were to other forms of bicycle or snow sports. I never said eMTB's weren't real bikes, I just said they are different bikes.

11/7/2019 9:12am Buy a dirtbike. Ride it on the track or trail. They're super fun to climb! Ride your MTB on MTB non-motorized trails. The problem is they're GONNA HURT TRAIL ACCESS FOR MOUNTAINBIKING! You're probably right in that e-bikes will get cheaper and better and than way more people will ride e-MTB. And we will lose trail access and be denied it on future trails because now we're all riding electric pedal assisted motorcycles (that's what they are!!!) on what are intended to be non-motorized trails with hikers and dogs and old people. MTB is already the Bad Guy of user...

11/7/2019 9:11am glad JCL had the balls to say that lol! now to the bigger issue you say your popping off everything on the way up?!? no one should be caring enough speed up hill to be popping off things its bad for the trails and dangerous for biker coming down the trails.

11/7/2019 9:08am Great article and totally agree. People who like riding these boat anchors were the guys who sucked on normal bikes.

11/7/2019 9:08am One point. The greater cycling market may well be driven by Europe, but the mountain bike market isn't and never has been.

11/7/2019 9:04am One of the plaintiffs, Gold Country Trails has two mountainbike groups as affiliates. It's a little more nuanced than 'cowboys' suing the USFS. The wilderness society was already running around with their hair on fire screaming about Ted Stroll/Sustainable Trail Coalition's move to allow bike access in future wilderness decisions, with one of their key points being the existence of e-bikes. Just because lawsuits happen regularly doesn't diminish the fact that they will be used to decide where people ride bikes. They already are.

11/7/2019 9:01am Hey Stik, I doubt you remember who I am or recall that we have been on the same side of this bike stuff for a few years now. I've always held you in regard as "one of the good guys." Regardless, I gotta say I am pretty let down by your reaction here. Personal insults aside, let's unpack this a bit. The image: editorial chose that image not for the e-bike guy, but the hammering pro. That's Josh Carlson, a well-known e-bike advocate. It's ironic and it's funny from that standpoint. Word choice: As you noted, I am a product...

11/7/2019 8:57am Different story Joe. I don’t think anyone has issues with impaired people riding them. However, that’s max 5% of the eBike market. The rest are just lazy, instant gratification types that are all too common in society these days.

9/19/2019 2:49am haha, this article rubs the readers the wrong way... I'm 100% with Peter. Come on Vital, don't try to avoid the blame for unethical behavior. Don't feel entitled because US readers offer you the privilege of our attention. It's a well-known rule if you are a professional journalist. Here is a little reminder for you: YOU SHALL NOT SPOIL THE RESULT OF ANY BIKE RACE* - The ban applies for 24 hours or 48 hours if race is on Saturday, Monday morning is fair game. - We use PST as a framework except if the race is in Hawaii or...
