sideshow Added a reply to Helmets

Yes. Rotational impact is a huge factor when it comes to eating shit. 6D's system has elastomers between the EVA liner and the hanging suspension (the part that is MIPS in TLD) to create a third part of the puzzle, basically little mini airbags which help slow down the impact speed while dissipating the energy into the helmet.

@grinch solid feedback. I won't get prescription lenses, but I'll have a look at those. Julbo was a suggestion earlier in the Autumn from a buddy, but your specific model suggestion is really helpful.

sideshow Added a comment about feature Why Are E-Bikes Such a Touchy Subject in the U.S.?

11/12/2017 8:59am
Many thoughts...first one being, branding: "E-Bike" is not as true to the nature of the vehicle as it could be, therefore creating issues with regards to land access. "P-Bike" would have been a better workaround, as "Pedal Assist" is more to the point and a lot less ominous of a name when it comes to describing how it functions and interacts with the trail/rider.

Wow! End of an era. Glad to hear that the decision was about quality and philosophy, genuine is hard to find these days.

sideshow Added a comment about feature Can MTB Spy Shots Hurt the Consumer in the Long Run?

11/1/2017 10:09am
Weird to hear that a brand would kowtow to an overly excited (and minor) consumer base and produce a product ahead of schedule in hopes of gaining an early foothold with their forthcoming redesign(s) or new piece(s). Sometimes it feels like the bike world is going the way of consumer electronics, pumping out incremental changes with little to no performance gain, just in the hope of pushing up sales. I've always thought that brands who eschew the "year model" in favor of just producing bikes and changing them as needed are the thinkers who are ahead of the curve. Many...

Those bikes have been discontinued from the looks of Bianchi's website. If you are in fact based in the UK, there are a half-dozen other bikes in that price range which have better geometry and spec, which are still in production.

TEAM ROBOT IS ALIVE. With so much kindling on the ground, I'm hoping for a tremendous conflagration. That's all the news we needed.

Cool to see Marz getting a second chance under the Fox umbrella. The sport had a weird empty feeling without The Red M charging down the hill.

sideshow Added a reply to Coil Shock + Trail Bike

Which did you feel worked better using an audio interview, air or coil? I've found that when I'm talking to people, I like to fidget with the preload on the coil. But being it's kind of heavy, so an air shock usually works better for super long convos, and the rebound and climb switches work just fine as fidget switches...

We are well away from the era I'm about to reference, but this is what Foes sort of did with their enormous 4.5in stroke Curnutt shock that debuted in 2006 (I went to their site just to fact check that I'm not misremembering). These beasts were based about a 2:1 leverage ratio. In theory, this gave more control, more oil...
Looked up T.H.E. while listening (just before the part where he discusses selling it off) just to see what's what over there [spoiler: not much, he wasn't joking]...but, the fenders are going for $7 right now. Guess what's in the mail? On a different note, what a cool story, quite the hustle and drive! Really interesting to learn about how much he was involved in product development and innovation early on.

sideshow Added a comment about press release The STIG Rides the SHAN Nº5

Terraplane's AM and DH bike line up is based around a high single pivot and yolked shocks, which is nothing new in itself. Don't forget the airplane was invented in two different places at the same time at the turn of the last century. There is little room for mind-blowing originality, and when a design is sensible, there is no reason it wouldn't pop up in several different places. Link-driven single-pivot bikes are dime-a-dozen, which only means that it's a solid design solution. People who want custom, hand-built steel bikes will seek out the Californians, and those who prefer what...
