Fair, but I think most mountain bikers probably use it to refer to horst link bikes, as in the new Tallboy. Not everyone is so obsessed with crustaceans to come up with new ways to define or mock it.

SC could get more seatpost insertion with VPP if they went back to driving the shock from the upper link, eliminating the shock tunnel. Considering they used to do that, then moved all their bikes to lower-link driven, it seems super unlikely. They could do a carbon upper link to shave weight from the tallboy, but the current alu link...

🚨 wall of text incoming 🚨 There's so much riding in California. To narrow it down, here's some coastal riding areas, as in, "you can see the coast from the riding area". What bike(s) are you bringing and what kind of trails do you like? From south -> north, excluding SD and Orange Country because there's a ton to ride...

But that's just me.

Not tech rumors, but soil tech history! The difference between Oregon, WA and BC is all about ice. Kilometer+ thick ice sheets created glacial terrain features and exposed more bedrock from Washington State north. Oregon didn't get the sweet, sweet ice sheet remodeling. The maximum extent of the Puget Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet was Tenino, which is between Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon. In the Seattle area you have a lot of glacial till soils that the ice pushed around. Further north the ice scraped away soils and smoothed the bedrock, making terrain for amazing tech riding. This...

Look, it seems to me that Luckey's primary motivation for this kind of wild speculation is to drive business to his ghoulish defense contracting company. I do agree with you that geopolitical expertise is often the domain of people with shaky track records, but also posit that any intelligence sources he's "privy" to might not be of the highest quality considering that his sources are probably a cadre of right-wing media grifters turned agency administrators in leadership roles at US intelligence and defense agencies that already have their own reliability issues. I actually do consume a lot of information from...

How does everyone want to celebrate once we hit 1000 pages on the thread? I was thinking maybe we could all go to Chilis and share a Triple Dipper. lmk.

Re: gold stanchions (or any other color for the matter). It likely has something to do with co's putting their own twist on Kashima coatings since that patent expired some time ago (7 years ago I think). The gold in Kash wasn't necessary but was used to provide a visual cue that something about the product was 'better' than normal hard ano on competitors' products. Separately, from my understanding TiNi coatings aren't ideal as the surface finish becomes too smooth/uniform, resulting in stiction. A small degree of surface porosity is required to hold a very light film of oil to...

Naw, it’s a fundamentally flawed design and manufacturing process (in terms of composites engineering), from what I can see from their prototype manufacturing pictures, as well as from Kerr’s broken frame pictures — in my opinion. Also, the fact that something is a prototype doesn’t mean that it’s permissible to utilize a dangerously designed / engineered / manufactured product, which could result in the substantial impairment or death of an athlete. The first flaw is the straight-insertion of the top tube AND the down tube into the lug, at the same draw angle. As such, if the bond isn’t perfect...

I don't believe that is what's really going on for a couple of reasons. 1, rubber generally expands much more than aluminum when heated so adding heat makes the seal fit tighter. 2, when designing our calipers we found that without compression played less of a roll with pad retract than you'd think. Too little compression creates sealing issues and too much increases risk of compression set. What I think is mostly likely causing what they are experiencing is super hard braking. That happens to usually correspond with lots of heat. Since seal deflection controls pad retract, if you apply...

I'd say sand casting will have a big issue with porosity. You'd need high pressure die casting to achieve compactness. Also, I'd say mechanical properties of casting ready aluminium alloys might be a bit on the lower side compared to 6000 and 7000 'aircraft grade' alloys, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the primary factor. That and the cost of investment. Casting is very good for chunky parts. I'd say it'd be good for rocker links for example. Seatstays and chainstays I'm not so sure... Fork lowers are still tubes which gives them a lot of strength. Also, yeah...

Mentioning both the real and false trail names verbatim together in this thread raises the page’s SEO and makes the page more findable for those searching either name. It also negates the purpose of the false trail name. Just because the location is an open secret doesn’t mean it should be even more obvious. If you really want to ride...

We'd probably all be surprised at how much room there is left for improvement in suspension. The majority of bike companies didn't start using data acquisition or accurate models of suspension performance until relatively recently. When your test riders are telling you the bike is "stable" or "not hooking up" or "pinballing through a section" or "sitting too deep in...

I could be misunderstanding, you're an expert, I'm not. But from the article showing a flip chip at the fwd shock mount: "This adjustment at the forward shock mount is not a geometry adjustment but a kinematic position that goes hand in hand with an secondary dog bone link that is specific to the type of shock - air or coil." I know they say it's for air or coil, but maybe it's more? By altering dogbone and fwd shock mount position they could make a more progressive curve and thus have more sag (with same pressure/spring rate), but by...

I would also guess the lack of a need for a dropper post on a dedicated DH frame allowed them to use more of the seat tube for the additional linkage. I'm seconding @Primoz's concern about the high forces going into those dogbone pivots - the upper one in particular has a lot of leverage over the shock link, and I hope they have any potential durability problems sorted if it ever carries over to a production model. Also, I can't say how accurate this is (to my eyes it seems close, even using a photo for reference, but it's...

Spotted in Vital's Pit Bits. Looks like the Pivot uses an eccentric mounting between the seatstay and rocker? Guess it's just a way of fine tuning BB height, head angle etc.

Re: Loris and Pirelli, remember that the Pirelli deal is with ALL Trek factory racing riders, which includes DH, Enduro, XC, road, and maybe even CX. This is a big big team deal and, despite being the top dog on the DH team, Loris is small potatoes compared to all the other Trek athletes who have no reason to not run the tires. Re: flex stays, some of the old Felt carbon equilink bikes had flexstays that were neutral at sag. I raced the Virtue Nine with flex stays in 2014. The bike rode fine for me so I don't...
