One thing missing here is the fact that with the proliferation of composite know how, there are more people around able to safely repair a wider range of issues. Rather than pretending we are recycling carbon bikes I’d love to see more frames designed in ways that facilitate repair. Repair is verifiable in a way that recycling is not, it is cost effective for everyone concerned, and it is as close as you’ll get to good for the environment. It probably flows on to other design decisions to ensure repair is viable (like bearing placement, etc etc), but designing bikes...

Long time lurker, first time poster here. For some background I’m an aerospace composites engineer and spent several years in Advanced Product Development with an emphasis on environmentally friendly materials. There’s so much to get into on this topic and if folks are interested I’d love to start a dedicated thread on materials and environmental impacts. The TLDR is, carbon fiber as a green product on its own is a fallacy. The raw fiber production may result in a certain level of carbon sequestering, but the process is still so energy intensive I wouldn’t call it an environmental positive. As...

Quick scroll thoughts: Does the e2e on the Gamux shock look wildly long?? AON Racing = Team I-Beam Racing Bruni on ODI grips after running DEITY the past season or two Looks like Jordan Williams has the previous gen AXS shifter, not a POD. The Maven lever on the Commencal looks short, no? Bar ends are so freaking in On Tahnee’s bike, it looks like there is a screw head recessed in the spindle. Maybe it’s more weight? Anyone know what chainring Trek is running with an Ochain? Doesn't look like the new XX chainring. New Shimano rotors look cheap...

I've heard about that. It's Enduro that's willing to give up its right to vote in order to disappear and be protected from the horrors happening to other racing genres. Right?

Why are modern mtb stems so cookie cutter when it comes to their dimensions? I was recently shopping around for one, and ended up finding the Equalizer by Funn. Not only did it come in a 42mm option which is somewhat uncommon, but they also offer a version that has a 10mm rise or drop depending on how you install it. It got me wondering why more companies don't do stuff like that? Instead of 40mm do 43mm, instead of 50mm do 48mm, add some rise or drop ext ext. The rise/drop thing is especially handy; instead of buying three...

Just a Concussion Hayden Wright and Jaimi Parr Far too often, the phrase “ just a concussion ” is used to downplay the severity of head injuries sustained in crashes. A knock to the head is frequently considered minor—especially when compared to broken bones or torn ligaments. But the reality is far more complex. In early 2025 long-time contributor Hayden Wright experienced a crash, resulting in a concussion that brought with it symptoms which persisted for months. Though invisible to others, the effects were deeply debilitating, with impacts noticed through every part of day-to-day life. In search of answers and...

At 6 foot 4 I have no idea why ppl keep saying big wheels are good for taller riders. The terrain you are riding on doesn't get bigger ?? Il fight you all day on stack height not being proportional , but it’s getting better and it’s fixable with the new crop of 80mm plus bars. Big wheels dont help bigger ppl, buy a bigger , longer frame ??? And enjoy the riding the trail rather than steam rolling it ?

I think it’s fine to let these things exist in the wild to those that want that experience. But our trails are already getting dummed down. Already getting easier now that machine built flow trails are way more prevalent than real single track often times. I definitely don’t want to ride a 32. I would hope it would stay with the boutique builders. I hate to say let’s work with US cycling and UCI to get some rules in place about no 32s in competition but seems like that’s the only way to slow the madness down from the big...

Here is your difference in steering bwetween a 70mm stem and a 35mm stem with straight 800mm bars. A video to make the scribbely lines more understandable: https://photos.app.goo.gl/bYf6TE4obQUwvhJG7 As you can see, the rotation diameters are virtually same (406mm vs 401mm). That's about a 1% difference. Your hands will travel about the same amount: 212mm vs. 210mm for a 30° handlebar turn. That's less than a 1% difference. What is slightly different is, of course the the "angle of attack" from which your hand will start moving, but that is because a longer stem will stretch your upper body position...

One more vote for looking at the system, so where the grips are in relation to the steerer. The problem is that, aside from Bike Yoke ( @Sacki ) nobody publishes setback values of bars as far as I know. And bars have WILDLY different setbacks, even more so if the sweep angles are high. Bars aren't made to hit a certain point in space with a given setback. They are just bent back and up. A high sweep bar should be paired with a longer stem to offset this. QED, I ran a 70 mm stem with high sweep...

I will never understand what is with you people and stem lengths. Stem length in itself does not matter at all. All that matters is where your grips end up being. You can achieve same bar position with 30mm stem and 50mm rise bar and with 50mm stem with 20mm rise bar. Or maybe someone with 30 mm stem and forward roll on bars and ends up being in simmilar position as someone with 50mm stem with backwards roll. What we should be meaasuring is middle of grip offset from center of rotation and that is all that could matter...

Explodo Liked a comment about Feature 32" Wheels—You're Kidding, Right? Bikes: Unaffiliated EP.5

I've been on real mountain bikes for 35 years now. The jump up from 26 was a good thing. I think I'm at my limit for bigger wheels. I was 5'9" when I was younger. Making the wheels bigger is just going to give me less space on the bike, or the wheelbase would have to be stretched to get me more between them thereby worsening my ability to get around tight corners. I have no issue with dual 29 and I'm sure I could get used to dual 32, but I don't see any benefit. The "wheels carry more...

Dialed was fantastic with all of it, the stories, the editing, and all around fun by Shaffer, and Jake. Killer work. It is sorely missed, and a shame that Fox shut it down. It was the essence of the World Cup week. One day I hope it makes a comeback.

This last season wasn't great coverage, because in part he was injured. I watch his channel during race season, for the POV practice laps. I still get a kick out of the racers perspective and watching he speed and track evolve. I still miss Fox's "Dialed" series, but that me LOL
