This. The industry hates leaks because they’re still trying to sell the old shit to you while they’re making the shops book preorders. I think snow is different in that they probably sell through by summer and so leaks don’t impact sales as much. But leaks are good for riders because we don’t have all the money and deserve to know when we should hold off on ordering a new bike or when we should consider selling the one that’s about to become outdated…

Gearboxes aren't efficient enough for trail bikes, yet we have people in here climbing 50% gradients apparently with 22/51 gearing, where it'd clearly be most efficient to just walk the bike up

Can we please not turn this into a d*ck-measuring contest regarding who rides which steep thing w/ which gearing?

I’m a heavily bias Norco fan over here. They just don’t build light bikes. When they did, they broke. Saying that… I definitely prefer a chonky bike as I have a chonky presence. I haven’t ridden a newer Pike, but a chassis from a few years ago felt like a wet noodle under me. The smallest chassis I feel comfortable on is a Lyric. I think they had clydesdales like me in mind for that Fluid.

Don't be shitty, man. Breach your shop's terms with trek and then Sspomer's just going to have to remove it anyway. You could have just said "I was in my Trek dealer and overheard they were launching two 32 inch bikes soon". THAT's a proper rumour!

I think 52% off a Fuel EXe is reasonable for a bike where you have to take the completely realistic risk that the company that makes the motor and battery will be defunct (or at least completely exited ebikes) before the warranty on all of the other parts is gone. On the Vail thing, I agree with Charlie. However, unless...

To give them their due, Vail don't seem to give a shit about anything to do with the guest experience, not just Crankworx. I could go full old man yelling at the clouds about all of the cost cutting, nickel and diming nonsense (WATER FOUNTAINS COST NOTHING!!!) that irks me these days.

I would agree. Vail taking over the resort didn’t help things either. They clearly didn’t give a shit about the event and made it harder and more expensive to do just about anything. I have a lot of respect for the small CWX team but they had zero pull with the Vail team. Not great conditions for a successful event.

The last gen Shimano 2x front mtb derailleurs were actually ridiculously good IMO. The horizontal swing rather than vertical made set up ridiculously easy once you got over your 20+ years of front derailleurs operating in the same general fashion knowledge, Simplex be damned. Getting rid of that vertical swing seemed to have nixxed a lot of opp for the chain to get derailed poorly.

Apologies if there is any redundancy in what I'm posting, I've fallen behind in my efforts to keep up with the discussions here. I've been up in Whistler for a bit during our annual escape here and bikeconomics is on my mind frequently. There is the cost associated with vacationing here, amplified by the costs of keeping a 16 year old rolling down the trails. My willingness to empty my wallet here just because I like Canada and Canadians. The relationship of tariffs to the cost of bike products. The overall sense of cost cutting visible at the resort itself...

Is 100k actually a carrot? Hardware development is expensive, I'm certain Atherton didn't developed their gearbox bike for less than 100k. I feel like riding a winning platform is more valuable than the prize money.

I think the selling point for CVTs in ICE-driven systems is that often gas engines have a pretty narrow torque band where they are efficient, with efficiency dropping off quite a bit outside of the band. A standard transmission with maybe 4 to 6 gears will end up just having a couple of sweet spots where efficiency is good. The CVT allows the system to live in the efficient band most/all of the time. Commercial 18-wheeler-type drives have staged transmissions to get them many more points where the system is good, much like our 12-speed drivetrains. They pop through 4...
