Yes watching a highlights reel or the condensed version will always be shorter. But for a live event, it was enjoyable. Last week's F1 race was nearly 6 hours long. You can watch a 30 minute highlight of the race. Just depends upon what sort of experience you want to have watching it.
4 hours on a Saturday might be tough to make happen for some. But 2:40 while it was on my third monitor while at work on a Thursday didn't leave me anything to complain about.
Dude a three hour broadcast is insane. It is crazy long. I think its a bit wild to say that pacing was a plus of the broadcast.

Kindly disagree, but I've always loved the long broadcasts. The average NFL broadcast is 3-3.5 hours, which feels too long to me because I'm not a fan so maybe the level of interest plays a role.
The women's event did seem to move faster, I think they had really good weather and not much wind. The judging also seemed more efficient. Tbf it has really bogged down in the past when every rider is taking the full window to wait for wind.
Here we go, the event is about to kick off! Start time has indeed been brought forward, let's hope the weather cooperates. Best of luck to all the riders!
The reality of mountain biking is that it happens in the mountains, and the mountains of Utah are notoriously shifty when it comes to weather. After a few incredible runs, including Godziek absolutely stomping his line for 90 points and the lead, and Jaxson Riddle finally delivering a run worthy of his potential, the event has gone on wind hold as the weather front we knew was on the way is hitting the venue. Thoughts go out to Carson Storch who had to be heli-lifted to hospital after crashing in his chute (and coming to a stop just a few meters short of what could have been a much much worse situation...). Couderc also crashed, under-rotating a front flip off a flat drop during what looked like a run that had serious podium potential, while Bienve went down under-rotating a sloooow 360 after nailing some seriously heavy moves up top. As always out here, coulda-woulda-shoulda weighs heavy on the mind, especially when it looks unlikely that anybody will get a second chance (if the first runs can even be completed).
How sick is this moto-style backflip variation by Jaxson???
A this point, the riders are hoping for a lull in the weather a the end of the afternoon, so nothing for it but to stay tuned at this point. Fingers crossed!
I hate to bash on the people that work hard to put this event on, but man it’s so annoying to see some wind (probably) cancel the event.
The riders and crews are already out here for weeks before. I think there should be a weather window where they can hold the final anytime in a 5-7 day period. WSL and FWT both do this, along with other outdoor focused sports. Idk man…
It is what it is. Axing the bloated live broadcast is the only way to save the event. Do a waiting period like surfing, film a production on the spot, cut a live premier show hours after the event. Would love to know what specific element of the broadcast requires them to run a single day event...
Simply no respect to the weather report. I'd reckon the riders would agree on pushing a day forward vs such a high risk of cancellation. How many years can we do the wind thing? Usually it's just a second run issue, and now we only got through half of first runs... Despite such a blatant weather report. Not a general wind forecast, just an outright huge storm.
Feel so bad for the riders/diggers. Poor Lemoine man...

I agree with most of what you're putting down, but I think the argument against not live is how do they manage a social media embargo to keep people from seeing the show or big parts of runs before they broadcast it. Workarounds for that exist or could be thought up, but doing it live guarantees they're all redbull views. It's not like NBC or someone else is purchasing the rights anymore and redbull doesn't put it behind a paywall so if people want to spoil the competition by watching before the broadcast that's kind of on them at that point.

The show should be cut within an hour or 2 of the event. They can still afford a smaller production truck if that's important to them.
Every year they do the livestream they cut out all the nonsense anyway. The youtube livestream went from ~6 hours to under 2, once cut.
If there is any concern about spoiling the results for 2-3 hours, that's just on people for having zero patience. They can spoil their experience if they so choose. I'll just put the phone down until the live premier is up.
And even with an efficiently cut live premier show post-event, I will STILL wait for the entire thing to finish so I can watch, only time stamping the runs and skipping all of Sal's podcasting
Doing a cut immediately after is surprisingly time consuming. I doubt they could put that out an hour or two later. The FWT did exactly what you’re describing one year after the Kicking Horse event. I think they were able to release the cut that evening. 5 hours later. It was a crazy huge effort. It was received like warm because apparently people get really hyped on something being live.
The normal procedure with the FWT is to announce the actual comp date 36 hrs before and then it’s a go for a live event. Much easier to execute than an immediate edited delay. Doing an edited delayed broadcast a few days later would be the easiest option. Release it on an evening when everyone can watch it. But don’t wait 3 months for no one to care like NST.
Sucks it got cut short, but we did get to see kade nose manny down the hill. Every cloud
obviously the drone shots are fine for the big moves. but it does take a rider like Kade to get me to complain about the drone. I need proper angles on his ENTIRE run lol. so much subtle bike control the entire run. i need a long lens angle on that stoppie. you can't see how much distance he travels in the from behind drone angle.

What problem does doing a cut after the event solve (other than alleviate the ADHD of gen Alpha viewers who are already wondering why the whole event isn't just a 1-minute reel anyway)? The riders still have to wake up in the morning and warm up in some kind of daylight. With the event brought forward just one hour, they were literally waiting for the sun to appear to be able to get going. It's not like everybody was standing around waiting for the broadcast intro to be over, they were practicing and warming up during this time. You also need to fly in the helicopters, mobilize the event crew, get spectators onto the site...things that are not easily accomplished when it's dark, for example. As for the pre-show being a bit long, I mean, these guys have been digging for two weeks and are about to risk their lives for our enjoyment...we can't give them an hour of our time for the stage to be set and some sponsor plugs to appear on screen? The sponsors who make the event possible...
I for one think the live factor is VERY important for an event like this. As soon as something is not really live, or shown as a condensed cut, the audience numbers drop drastically. It just doesn't have the same appeal when it's recut, and it often ends up feeling staged.
The real solution has to be having a window during which the event can run, as already mentioned do it like the world surf league does it. You run the event when the waves show up (or in this case, when the wind shows itself out). This is of course a much heavier production, meaning you have to pay your whole production crew to be on standby for potentially a few days, which is maybe why we haven't seen it happen. Also, I wonder if there are better times during the year to run the event, but I'm no expert on Utah weather and I'm sure the riders know when it's a good time to be out there doing this stuff.
