I saw a certain North American who rides for a European team who is supposed to be switching a component brand still riding an old component brand who said the new component brand will give $1,000,000 if the other component brand doesn’t win a single race… rivian out

What does this mean? I can’t figure out the sentence structure, especially with the forced vagueness.

Not sure it this one has been mentioned before but apparently XC Santa Cruz team is gone (it wasnt a factory team but a private Italian team sponsored by Santa Cruz). Luca Braidot to another italian team.

And I've heard that a continental junior champion will be joining Mondraker factory team.

Who gives a shit about how reliable rivians are, anybody's thoughts on EVs, etc, in this thread we should almost always be stoked when non-industry sponsors (making a OEM tailgate pad doesn't teleport them into the industry guys) get in on our guys and gals. Good on her for looking outside the mainline sponsors, who are all on the struggle bus right now, and towards somebody who, for now, is swimming in their scrooge McDuck vault of VC money. Get your bag Kate!

Edit: Those sunglasses upside down and two inches from her head in that photo there turn what would be an otherwise cool photo into a bit of a dud!

Bring back Grundig, Shaun Palmer and shorts in DH and I'll die happy tomorrow.

Shaun Palmer hated shorts. But loved team rumors.

Rumor I heard was spec gravity were off magura brakes. But no idea where they'd go! Maybe Mavens seen as they are officially SRAM sponsored again since last year for drive train?

Also wondering if their gen s team will be at all world cups or Will they do a hybrid plan of select national/continental and world cups?

Congrats to Bailey Goldstone on 3rd this weekend at NZ DH national series round 2. From what I understand from the new rules, because this race was part of the UCI continental series and in the top 5, she gets a entry into a WC race. Does she get to pick which race she enters or does the UCI assign her a race? If she gets to pick, which venue does she pick? Good to see the CDN on the podium 😎

The top 5 in elite and juniors get to pick a race this year or in 2026. If a junior ages up to elite than it is still an option for them in elite.

Easy to come 3rd in the women's Elite when there are only 3 riders (correction 4) in the Elite female field.

Bailey came 12th overall in the female field with 7 x U19 and 2 x U17 riders in front.

New rumor I think? Milatul Khaqimah of Indonesia, with 420 pts (top ranked rider without a team in any category, except for Veronika Widmann) was put on Intense Factory in the spreadsheet by somebody. I looked into it, and she has very few followers on Instagram, and barely any from europe/north america. But... Joe Breeden, Lou Ferg, Mille Johnset, and Oscar Griffiths all follow her.

My first thought of the creation of the continental series aspect of all the changes is the opportunity it brings to the rest of the (err, "non-white") world and what that means for the health of the race scene and mountain biking in a general sense. Can't wait to see who has the chance to break thru to top with proper exposure and support !

I've heard this weekend that Widmann has a ride in the WorldCup this year, European team apparently, but can't say more than that... we'll see in the next few weeks

Does anyone have insight on additional financial support for all these teams switching to belt drives? It doesn't seem like the low (and further decreasing) probability of winning a mere $100,000 would move the needle any meaningful amount. The most plausible reasons would be additional sponsorship funds from the belt associated brands or hoping to take advantage of the seemingly disproportionate publicity about the $100,000 prize. Additional sponsorship seems most likely, wondering if that's documented anywhere.

As I have said, no way do the financials add up: to produce a fleet of bikes for a team is more than 100k. Something else is going on. Plus, half these teams realize they will not win it.

Yes, something else is happening. All of the following is a guess, but I think a pretty good one.

Gates, a company already well known for Motorcycle belts and that according to google, has $830m in revenue but has only dabbled in cycling in the fringes for years is saying LFG. They likely want in on the E-bike market as mixed motors/drivetrains evolve and full power E-bikes ditch derailleurs because lets be honest, traditional drivetrains just don't hold up as well under an e-bike mashing, and they know DH is going to test the to the limits. This is going to be their entry point and they likely know E-bikes will switch over to a more inside motor based drivetrain in the next few years as the designs improve.

Pinion already has units that can do it, and I bet Bosch, Brose (Spesh/Sram) and others will have matching stuff soon. Gates wants to drive the acceptance of belts as a standard, that they are built to last, and are just as good as chains without the hassle. Like anything else, best examples right now being electric cars or private space flight, it'll start out crude and with lots of room for improvement, but with people using them, suddenly have lots of investment to drive R&D, and as they get better, that's when you'll start to see wider acceptance and better performance.

This is the only thing that really makes sense with the project, as lighter weight bikes using gear boxes doesn't make a ton of sense unless they can get the weight down to current DT weights and prices, but E-bikes using a complete motor drivetrain with a belt absolutely makes sense and they're willing to put up cash not only to these teams, but sponsor them as well, I'm betting footing a pretty big bill for each if they were doing a whole press release with all the teams they had on their roster. IFR was on the ropes and now they have new and bigger name riders, AON coming out of no where with likely a stacked team, Atherton coming back in from everything thinking they weren't even going to be a team next year and MS doesn't really mess around with trying to get the best deals, or he wouldn't have had a top team thats been around for almost 20 years. It kind of starts to make sense that they switched to a company as small as Zerode if Gates wanted a 4th manufacturer to sponsor with a top team after Intense built that bike for them and there's one sitting there, ready to go.

It's Gates-gate...

MetaDave:

Thanks for the insight.  Huh, exciting times.  To go back to my hypothetical earlier post--maybe we will see Rach on the WCDH circuit sooner than anticipated?  I mean, given the list of potential riders / winners, Reese is at the top, but if Rachel put in some time, and the difference between the depth in the Men's / women's fields, maybe she'd be a better bet?  Of course, the potential for the advantage of just smashing rock gardens on a whole other level with no derailleur, maybe the innovation will prove itself first!

Either way, the link to e-bikes makes perfect sense.  Having bought a Cannondale, full-power last year, and proceeded to burn through two Shimano drivetrains in no time flat (SRAM is holding up better, btw), the idea of a belt-driven / non-cassette shifting system makes a MOUNTAIN of sense for e-bikes.

The guy literally owns the company (or a part of it at least) why would he be out there promoting other brands in the same market segment as his own company.

I'm not sure if TN National is a regional feeder race for UCI, but I'm pretty sure Aaron can get a top result at any American regional race and get in that way.  I'm not sure the timing...might miss the first round (s), though?

@sspomer would it be possible to get a link-checker integrated? "Thanks for your post, the link you are including has been posted 37 times in the last 2 weeks on pages X, Y, Z...., are you sure you want to post it again?"
