7/6/2026 9:39am I swear this is SRAM propaganda: "It just doesn't make sense to add a more complex, harder-to-maintain, more expensive option that's locked to your frame and that no one has parts for." More complex to maintain? The Pinion service interval is 6,200 miles — people race entire seasons without touching their gearbox. Meanwhile derailleur drivetrains need constant adjustment and eat consumables, especially on ebikes. Gearboxes will take over ebikes within a few years — the motor negates the efficiency loss, the weight is low and centered, and ebike torque destroys conventional drivetrains anyway. DH won't be far behind (less unsprung...

7/6/2026 9:39am Try 25 years. Ever since the first Rohloff hub integrated frames that Nicolai built. I agree that I don’t think they will see widespread popularity, but the key ingredient to their design is how tough and low maintenance they are. All you really have to do is change the oil. Anecdotal example is a friend of mine who has an...

7/5/2026 9:47am There’s been a motor/gearbox unit from Pinion for almost 3 years now. Nicolai offers in in the S16 MGU

7/2/2026 6:57pm That’s an OG modification! Back when Iron Horse were selling trail bikes with 83 mm bottom brackets. You had to get the XT “big ring” cranks that were indeed for touring. They didn’t just go right on though… You had to take a hacksaw to the granny ring tabs for clearance. You also couldn’t use any spacers, and it helped...

7/1/2026 8:27pm The reason flight attendant has a huge uptake in XC is because SRAM sponsored teams are required to run it. I know four different world cup athletes and they have all said they would just prefer a manual lockout. When it works properly it's alright but it's heavy and frequently has connectivity problems between all the components. It seems more casual users like it with one less thing to think about while riding and the weight doesn't matter to a more casual rider. As for trail/enduro bikes, ever wonder why every single SRAM EWS athlete stopped riding LYRIK and started...

7/1/2026 8:25pm Radial tires from everyone but Kenda, should create some more skus in rubber, but I don’t expect to see any new treads- except for 32 in tires , which will be weird looking. All new e-bike motors will all have gearboxes, freeing the high pivots but also improving the mid and low pivots : should see new framesets sooner than expected Sea otter, eurobike, and even bespoke already happened so most of the years “hot shit” is already out Shimano still won’t release new saint.

7/1/2026 8:25pm This meme continues to be a poor interpretation of carcinization/convergent evolution... The crab is not some final form that everything is destined to become. The lesson from carcinization is that unrelated species independently evolved into crab-like bodies. Not that we will one day all be crabs. I think a more fitting example of carcinization in the bike industry would be floating brake arms: a variety of bike manufactures independently arriving at a similar tech to solve the same problem. And at the end of the day, that shit is sitting at the bottom of the ocean

6/24/2026 10:06pm While they're saying this is a test, they added the bolt holes for the idler on all production frames. I couldn't figure out what these were for, until today. Makes me think this "concept" is coming sooner than folks are letting on.

6/24/2026 1:39pm For the people who complain about too many bikes being horst link now--get ready it'll be all of them soon. Being able to easily split the rear triangle makes belt drive possible. Gonna be hard on the sales floor to tell people the chain that needs constant maintenance is better than the belt that doesn't. Maybe another one of the reasons Santa Cruz shifted the bullit/vala away from VPP. Seat post insertion, belt compatibility, and minimizing ugliness; three pretty compelling reasons. I think brands are going to probably be hard pressed to put all their R&D into ebike horst link...
