Nice! He's got my sealant spreading technique. And nice homemade internal system. I made my own with some hydraulic line and some of those little Sram trinkets. So figure he could telecommute to BTI and have his bike diploma by the end of Junior High and do the Olympic Training Camp course on High School summers and be ready to hit the big time after graduation. Or... Preferably, get to a good engineering school and get a degree. Either way I can see a bright future.

My point isn't that these bikes shouldn't exist, its that why are they so portly? The suspension is lighter. The frames should be lighter, since the fork axle to crown is less. You don't need Codes or Saints. You want good EXO tires, but I'd argue you don't need DDs. You can probably get away with slightly lighter rims. My 6" enduro bike is built tougher but weighs (and cost) less. I love my aggro hard tail for how it handles differently, but it weighs a ton less than my enduro.

Sorry, but no. This is the same old adage of people going "VPP has this type of leverage ratio curve (the upside down U)". As we've seen in the current crop of VPP bikes, this is not true. There is a reason the engineers at SC designed the old VPP stuff this way, just like there is a reason Ibis has gone with the leverage curve above. It really has more to do with how the curve works with an air shock paired with your average noodling dentist

Eh, I'll disagree with that. While it is somewhat progressive in the first part of the travel, the ultimate leverage ratio curve is one that is fairly linear by today's standards. What this means is the bike will be somewhat supple off the top while holding the rider in the middle of the stroke in less-than-aggressive situations. However, when a rider starts pushing the bike, the rider will find the suspension to be a bit over zealous to rider input. There is no getting around the starting leverage ratio vs ending leverage ratio no matter what the curve looks like...

I have this conversation with a lot of customers. In the PNW, these are 2nd/3rd/etc bikes. If you want one rig for everything, most of these brands offer a 140mm 29er, which seems to be the sweet spot. Unfortunately, the 140mm completes typically come with a spec that is burlier/heavier, almost the same as their 160mm counterparts. What I've been doing lately is custom building the 140mm platform with a build kit that is closer to the 120mm builds. Pike, 27mm rims, 2.3 or 2.4 EXO tires, etc. Keep the weight under 30lbs but have enough travel to back up...

This x 10000. Those stinky propedal levers need to be phased out for anything not XC. The sooner the better. Hi/Lo compression adjustment cannot be considered a premium in 2020.
