I'd say Maes proved he can do it. Hill and Maes and Rude for that matter have all shown they can throw down similar fully pinned times on some gnar EWS stages and be close to each other. Properly motivated and correctly trained he could be competitive.

i have no riding experience with a new budget-minded DH bike, so i can't address parts/spec performance. i cruised around some older bike photos on the site here and it seemed like in 2011-2012, things were pretty darn decent (materials and suspension). geometry was pretty dialed too if you were an "average-sized" rider. gwin's 2011 session. definitely shorter/steeper than what we see now, but seems manageable, eh? 
if you're a taller rider, it seems like modern geometry/sizing would be the eye-opener of these new bikes. check out minnaar's world champs v10 from 2012!

Just watched it for a 3rd time. That would look insane in person. It's like a fest series level of racing, absolutely massive and full commitment. Tech mixed with mega booters, not a bad combo for spectators.

It wasn't. The 1st guys to crash is Vasco Bica and it is a elite rider from Portugal, this one is Tiago Ladeira a junior rider from Portugal also. Both of them are teammates from Miranda Factory Racing. And btw Tiago broke is finger in this crash.

Amaury is clearly a ninja. Hit tree, take off foot, hand, push on. No biggie. from qualifying today and this is apparently after he crashed earlier in his run. he qualified 17th, 7 seconds off the pace.

last year a swiss broadcasting company bought the rights for the broadcasting of the footage. that's why we couldn't watch the world champs even so there was never a problem at the world cups. i guess the same happened with canada. you gotta figure out who bought the rights
