I get the sentiment of what you're saying... but I would contend that the avinox motors have throttles... you just operate them by moving your feet. 460w of output with 25w of input, 800w of output with 100w of input and max power being delivered at 160w of rider input, is not pedal assist. It is pedal driven throttle assist.

Surron had a prominent presence at Sea Otter, and a number of kids were riding these e-motos (along with pit bikes) throughout the expo in ways that were disruptive and inconsiderate. I’m still developing my perspective on high-powered eMTBs (which I consider a separate thing), but it’s hard to ignore how often these machines seem to encourage poor behavior — or at least attract it. I often hear the argument that it’s better for kids to be outside on bikes (of any sort) than indoors glued to their phones. In principle, I agree. But increasingly, it feels as though the...

It the Bosch vs Avinox regulatory/sustainability approach simply a matter of regional company culture? Bosch being German is used to dealing with the EU environmental and product regulation. I imagine they have some consideration for sustainability of the product category and the perception of the regulatory bodies. Avinox/DGI is Chinese and operating in their "regulatory" environment. The Chinese tech approach seems push out product with the highest possible specs with the lowest cost, leveraging the huge production capabilities and leaving the consumer to figure out if it's legal, sustainable or ethical in their region. If the product saturates the market...

I don't see that ban happening. Larry Pizzi, who helped create the 3-class system and advance it with People For Bikes, is quick to push back that some legitimate riders need the throttle to get moving. Seniors, loaded cargo bikes, and so on can all fit that category. Pedego, as a brand, seems to bank on that type of throttle...

I believe it is up to a total of 35 states that have adopted the three class structure for e-bikes. California and New Jersey are both taking things a step further, but true enforcement is lacking. There is nothing to stop anyone from advertising something as an eMTB, even if it is "out of class" and the brand can say...

I’ve said it a couple times so apologies if it’s a broken record . The problem for me isn’t 150nm, or 1500watts. It’s 800% assist . Humans fundamentally make different choices when things are easy vs. hard . I can maybe go 20mph uphill on a trail on my meat bike , but only for an instant, then I’m gassed . So I never do that . When there’s suddenly no disincentive (it being exhausting) the total time spent of people going 20mph on blind single track is going to be much higher, thus the probability of isssue increases. At...

I saw it mentioned elsewhere by a brand representative that the major growth area was in their adventure moto gear. It's all relatively high ticket, and the one segment of moto that is very strong these days.

Thanks for the background. Imagining composites companies venturing towards motorsports, especially if they can get some kind of a foot in the door, is not hard. I'd be wiling to bet the margins are a lot better than they are in the bike world...

A bit delayed, but you can find my analysis of Fox's Q4 results here. Outside the obvious, the big news is the moderate amounts of restructuring the brand is undertaking.

As someone who was there from the very beginning (okay EWS #2), I think the story arc of EWS/EDR is a bit more complex that people think, and that Chis Ball is not the boogie man some make him out to be. EWS was not just Chis Ball, it was a run by a board, with Chis as the most public facing member of the organization. Keep in mind that in 2013 enduro racing was seen as an exciting new sport (yes I know, it wasn't new in France and Italy) and the timing was perfect with new wheel sizes...

Here's a rough idea. I'm sure there are some details missing, and despite my best efforts, this rabbit hole has some twists. So you have Mark Hancock, co-founder of PACS Group, owner of 323 skilled nursing facilities in 17 states. Current net worth estimated at $2.4 billion. PACS went public on the NYSE in 2024 at $21/share, currently at ~$36.50...

A lot of companies have been trying to absorb as much as possible regarding the tariffs to avoid pricing themselves out of the game... But that can only last so long..

“Against this challenging backdrop, our bike business ended fiscal 2025 slightly above 2024 in an industry experiencing turbulence and challenges across many of our OEM customers. We have the financial strength to lead with our brands and a discipline to protect our margin structure while the industry works through its cycle.” In a recap, Dennison stated, “We are not counting...

Fox Factory reported earnings this evening. I'll do a deep dive post later, but here are a few takeaways. Q4 Results - Came in about as expected (overall). 2026 Guidance - Lighter than expected, but there are talks of divesting in certain assets (like Marucci) SSG (the unit bike components live in) lagged about 5% in year over year sales. Management described bike as "slowly stabilizing" but explicitly acknowledged "disruptive market entrants" forcing legacy brands to "consolidate or cease operations". Maybe they have caught onto this thread? Lol. Stock is flat in post market trading, down 4% prior to the...

$6,666 x 15% = $1,000. i.e. at the low range what was $6,666 became $7,666. $1,538 x (15% + 50%) = $1,000. i.e. at the high range what was $1,538 became $2,538. Many, perhaps most businesses operate by borrowing money, converting it into products, selling those products at a gross profit, using that to pay interest, salaries, leases and other overheads, and then hopefully leaving a net profit which might be reinvested (or be the reward of capitalism, but the reward hasn't existed in the bike industry recently, it's been negative). Borrowing 15% more requires paying 15% more interest, which...

From the Financial Times article: "The US private equity firm said on Wednesday it had agreed to hand its remaining equity stake to the Dutch group’s top-ranking lenders. KKR and the backers of its funds will lose all of the €1.1bn equity cheque they wrote to acquire Accell in 2022, as well as hundreds of millions more that they pumped...

Apologies if this is too far off topic, but Escape Collective just announced they're now cash-flow neutral (they've been running a deficit since they launched). Pretty impressive when you consider how much high-quality content they put out and and doubly so that it's funded entirely by member subscriptions.

How DIY are you willing to go? 200-gallon galvanized stock tank (they usually have drain plugs) ~$200, flexible or oval ceiling curtain track ~$150, heavy duty shower curtain or vinyl sheet and install your own grommets ~$100. Assuming you already have water and a drain you can tie in to.
