I wouldn't put much weight in the enduro mag test findings - the results don't make any sense. I see a few issues: 1. Shimano XTR, XT, and SLX all have the same mechanical and hydraulic power output, but the test results show them as being wildly different. 2. They also show TRP DHR evo as dramatically underperforming XTR. Having used both, this is just incorrect... 3. And lastly, XTR being next to Maven in terms of test results in laughable. They say ā€œproprietary bindingā€ but when you go to their website it says ā€œfully SPD compatibleā€ So what’s unique about them then? I wish more companies weren’t afraid of deviating from SPD cleats, I feel like they really limit innovation.

It’s honestly kind of a shame it failed. It builds a better wheel for long travel 29 applications and it’s a standard that already existed before boost. It’s just a DH hub. Let’s all collectively blame Trek. Boost 148 was their idea.

Comparison of bars with rise modeled in. Both have a similar max load. 35 mm bar is on top and 31.8 mm bar is on bottom. Bending moment is at its maximum on the inboard end and zero at the free end so I think it makes sense that the stiffness of the innermost section of bar is quite influential in terms of deflection. Tomorrow I’ll whip up some sort of comparison. Deflection can be analyzed by integrating across the width of the bar so if the outer 75% of a 35 mm bar were identical to a comparable 31.8 mm bar, the deflections would be identical over that length and the only difference would come down to that innermost 25%.

Those tests always drive me nuts when they attempt to do vibration/damping analysis. I don’t think I’ve seen one come up with useful data for what they’re trying to prove/test. I wish I could use the shakers at work for personal use. šŸ˜‚
Doesn’t that comparison assume uniform cross section/stiffness across the whole length and neglect the fact that both taper to the same diameter fairly quickly? The flex will be distributed across the whole bar, not just at the stem interface. I would imagine that taper profile might actually be more important than just clamp diameter. I remember my old 31.8 Boobars...
Imagine choosing a standard that results in a heavier and weaker handlebar... 🤦 35mm handlebars are stronger and lighter than 31.8 for the same stiffness. The first 35mm bars in like 2012 may have been overly stiff but minus a couple of outliers that hasn't been the case for the better part of a decade now.

Correct they are thermosets, most are very, very stiff in compressive loading situations, >30ksi. Just as stiff as the aluminum caliper under similar compressive loadings. The only reason there would be impressions and deformations in the phenolic piston blocks is due to poor design leading to stress raisers that allow for point loading putting the material into a plastic deformation condition above typical elastic conditions. I personally have never seen such issues with the phenolic inserts in my Hopes, and I have yet to ever hear of anyone mention it before. I don't have a stress-strain curve for Bakelite or...
