Jeff, Location is literally the only thing that matters for small-scale bike shops these days. To really thrive, many, many, things out of the control of a small business owner need to exist. To thrive, once it took building community in your store with group rides, racing, etc. Car-centric culture and social media driven concepts like strava have decimated the traditional ways an enthusiastic entrepreneur could build a business. But SRAM and Shimano have had a duopoly in the drivetrain market for ages, so maybe it's about time some others get some market share too. While I like both companies...

Funn is fully vertically integrated(like Fratelli/aka Spank), they even own the brothel they entertain product managers at! Being an actual manufacturer gives a brand like Funn a lot more margin to work with.

I was listening to a road biking podcast recently. One of the guests on the podcast is currently a DS for a bigger team and used to be a world tour rider. One of the things that came up in discussion is how absolutely insane the new generation of riders are. They are SO fast. They are SO good in their training. They are SO dialed in their nutrition and recovery.
