8/3/2026 8:52am Jeff, Location is literally the only thing that matters for small-scale bike shops these days. To really thrive, many, many, things out of the control of a small business owner need to exist. To thrive, once it took building community in your store with group rides, racing, etc. Car-centric culture and social media driven concepts like strava have decimated the traditional ways an enthusiastic entrepreneur could build a business. People are afraid to ride road bikes, people’s egos have been cultivated to cater to Strava Kudos instead of Wednesday Night Worlds… the reality of bike shop ownership has become full...

7/31/2026 12:00pm I like all your trail takes –– I think we like the same kind of fun. This makes me want to go to Whistler!

7/30/2026 11:58am I was down to a trail bike and an ebike just a week ago, now I'm back up to XC, trail, enduro, and ebike. But after riding the enduro bike at the park last weekend, I think I realized I'm too old and hobbled for enduro, and I might parlay the trail and enduro rigs into a solid, pedalable all-mountain...

7/30/2026 11:49am Avinox is far from a monopoly. Looking just at MGUs, I wouldn't underestimate players like Gobao. And, more broadly speaking, I wouldn't count out TQ or Bosch just yet. But SRAM and Shimano have had a duopoly in the drivetrain market for ages, so maybe it's about time some others get some market share too. While I like both companies...

7/28/2026 10:16am Don't forget the PooBah and Grand PooBah John Tomac signature shoes from the '90's by Nike ACG. They even used recycled rubber soles.

7/16/2026 12:08pm Nike made some flat pedal MTB shoes in the mid 2000s in collaboration with Andrew Shandro, the Air Whistler. They were basically stiff Nike SBs with pretty grippy (for the time) soles. Pretty cool. I had a pair. I had to do a deep stream crossing in Crested Butte, took them off, and tied them around my handlebars. One fell...

7/2/2026 1:23pm If you were looking for an O-chain compatible Shimano crank for DH, I've wondered before if you could just use XT 8130 (Superboost) cranks on 83mm shell bikes without the 4.5mm spindle spacers on both sides? How would a 73mm shell with 9mm of spindle spacers be functionally different than a 83mm shell with no spacers (other than the 1mm...

6/26/2026 10:42am What a sticky situation. Surprised by some of the characters wrapped up in it. Will we get yet another statement, or will the newly named party stay quiet?

6/22/2026 8:08am Funn is fully vertically integrated(like Fratelli/aka Spank), they even own the brothel they entertain product managers at! Being an actual manufacturer gives a brand like Funn a lot more margin to work with.

6/12/2026 9:43am I was listening to a road biking podcast recently. One of the guests on the podcast is currently a DS for a bigger team and used to be a world tour rider. One of the things that came up in discussion is how absolutely insane the new generation of riders are. They are SO fast. They are SO good in their training. They are SO dialed in their nutrition and recovery. The guest made a point to bring up an interesting-to-me factoid: They can't let the younger riders anywhere near the big-name riders during team training rides. None of them...
