Interesting. I've also been riding a mullet full time for over a half year, and definitely appreciate being able to move around the rear end more at 5'8". I can make a full 29 work, it just requires more work and precise movements. Mullet lets me get a little sloppy on steeps, jumps, or little up-and-over hops and not buzz. I haven't played around with going down to a 2.3 rear, but then again, I like to be able to break the rear loose predictably. When I run 2.5 front and rear, that's a lot harder. 2.5 front 2.4 rear...

From my experience on a few different mullet bikes, the mullet stuff does handle smaller. It is an odd thing though, I feel perfect setup has a lot to do with tires. on a same sized wheel bike, typically 27.5 or 29", I'd run a 2.4 or 2.5 front, and 2.3 or something on the rear. I want a little more front grip than rear, as I don't want to end up on my face. The mullet bikes seem very different for what is best for me though. I've held off for so long on making a stance with the mixed wheel thing, I really wanted to ride a number of bikes before drawing any conclusions. But, here it (kind of) goes - if you're looking for a larger wheel experience like what 29ers offer but are not of large stature, the mixed-wheel is all it's cracked up to be. Rear shock performance is tough. Using this test as a model, the bike is just as important as the shock unit. In the case of the Spartan, I rode the 38 with two diff cartridges (Grip and Grip2)...

Nice to see a high pivot idler bike recognized for what they’re good at - erasing rough terrain. The guys at Outbike can’t seem to get theirs setup properly to appreciate any of the benefits. To be clear I’m happy to concede some trade offs but those bikes descend a category above the claimed travel.

Maybe you missed the part where Ryan said he would buy the Spire? In the end, it isn't about what bike our testers favored most. It is about the areas where each bike excels and how that may speak to our readers.

A couple things that I have learned over the years... When Adjusting your handlebar roll, keep your fingers off the brake levers! I see a lot of people reach for their brake levers when adjusting their bars which will rotate your wrist and may throw off the perfect roll for you. Bars first, then brakes. Also make sure your actually standing on the bike and in attack position when trying to find that sweet spot, so many people do it when sitting down on the saddle or just standing on the ground, this makes a huge difference! Got to talk to Gwin for the first time today. No crowd hovering & no stress. Married life suits the guy. Luca's crash was gnarly. I yanked my phone down in shock trying to film it so can't show anybody. Dude is tough as nails. Also, Walker Shaw is the Ironman. He did the last run of pro DH practice, grabbed his trail bike and sprinted back up to the lift line and pulled 1st in Single Crown DH then hopped back on the tractor for 10th in Pro DH

Man...so many monster trucks that "sorta" pedal good uphill these days. YT needs to make a "Package Deal" that includes: Basic $300 dirt jumper $1500 150mm trail bike $2000 DH bike. That way for $4k you wouldn't have to buy these "not really perfect for anything buy ate up my entire bike budget trying to do it all" quiver killers. Seriously, who wouldn't buy a $4k package that had those 3 bikes? You'd be done for a year and have everything to go out the door that would be the right tool for the job. Instead, you buy this giant...

I believe they put on 38 mm forks this year. This would be a big up for my riding buddy who's after a bike for his now 97 kg @ 192 cm. Selling a slimmer fork and getting a new one is not something beginners are up to, or most people looking at this price range.

To get the back end to slide a bit in a good way, I run my bike as a 79er with a 27" in the back and a 29" in the front. This way, I can get away with running a wider tire in the rear for an even better controllable slide. Though, I'm just starting out with trying tire choices. I'm happy for any help I can get!

I used the tire as a front only after about a month of riding as both front and rear, and it is definitely better as a front in my opinion. I think it would pair well with a 2.3 DD casing tire in the rear, still tough, but not as grippy or heavy, and it would allow the front to track super well while the back end might slide a bit (in a good way)

Assuming you'd use this up front, with a faster rolling tyre on the rear..Would't use the Assegai as a rear tyre.

Your comments about the DHRII being a good choice in the northwest are spot on. I call Bellingham home and I run them front and back all year round, my favorite tire I've ridden to date. I'm disappointed to hear about the mud clearing issues though... This looked like a tire that would rival the Shorty in the slop during the winter but better on roots, so much for that thought...
