1/23/2026 12:36pm I'm a huge fan of DOET by Dan Norman, and tell people about it all the time. I think I read that whole book in two days. I hurt my neck from nodding along in agreement as I was reading.

1/23/2026 10:11am Yes, reading torque specs is helpful, but I think that's a pretty high bar to expect for every one of the hundreds of bolts on a bike. Deiter Rams is a pretty smart designer, and he said good design is honest, and it should make a product understandable and useful. Speccing a big tool interface with a low torque spec doesn't seem very honest or understandable, and stripping the threads of your master cylinder doesn't seem to make the product useful, either. Another smart person, a park ranger who was teaching my group of friends about trail design and maintenance...

1/22/2026 11:23am Agreed on this one, though having one tool to handle everything is also a good design choice from the user's perspective. The thing is, even with a T25 bleed screw, you won't do much damage if you have an aluminium body and a steel screw. The problem lies in having a plastic screw and a plastic body and speccing a tightening torque that is easily achieved 'finger tight' by only tightening by twisting the round stem of the T25 torx wrench without using the perpendicular extension(s). Screwing plastic bolts in plastic threads is just not a common thing and I...

1/22/2026 8:44am Indeed. As I said "I've never stripped the threads from a Magura master..." but this seems to be a pretty common occurrence. It strikes me that having the torque called out in the manual is often insufficient which is why said perhaps it would be helpful if they they offered some visual cues on the parts such as having "...the torque spec debossed on the clamp." They've been making these brakes for 10 years now so if it were costing Magura too much in warranty replacements or bad press I assume they'd revert to their previous design where the carbotecture...

1/22/2026 8:17am Just because that is what is on your bike, does not mean it's well designed, some of these fixings/torque values are probably not the appropriate choice. In your example.the thread size is completely different between the two fixings though, so I would expect a different torque. Ideally this would be with a different tool size also. There is a great...

1/22/2026 7:23am The designer should be selecting an appropriate fixing size/tool size for the application. Good design should make it easy for the user to get it right and hard for them to get it wrong.

1/21/2026 10:12pm Privateer have people in BC doing testing/development. The prototypes of the last generation of frames were spotted in Whistler if I recall. So it could be them, they don't seem to have much stock on their site at the moment, so possibly new stuff is coming.

1/21/2026 1:11pm fwiw, last year was the first year we ever had to pay to get lawlor his creds at a world cup. $3k for the races we attended. it's not a budget killer for us, but $3k goes along way on other projects for us.

1/21/2026 1:10pm Hi, long time WC media guy here (14 years long).. I'm also very curious to hear some names and facts about this from you But in the meantime let me share some of my own. Each team is allowed to register photographers and videographers (each team then receives a set number of photo and video bibs for the season). if someone doesnt work for a team they can register as independent media once they have letters of assignment from a verified media outlet. there are little to no restrictions as to what can be shot/posted. This hasnt changed since the...

1/20/2026 11:26pm i immediately thought its an Alu mule for the firebird. I dont imagine another bike company, no matter if its affiliated with DW-Link will blatantly copy the Pivot Phoenix layout, down to the flexstays. but hey, its my best guess. the dual idler gave it away. So now it got me thinking, The Devinci Spartan hmm....that high pivot setup is a little dated now. ++hint hint, im also the one that spy shotted that proto several years ago on the same mountain++ And also the norco range haha

1/20/2026 11:24pm To jump on this having dealt with spec'ing and getting bars to market, the 35 is stiffer than you will get out of a 31.8. Strength, at max strength 35 may be stronger, but trust me, we aren't getting near failure for either, at the end of the day, weight and flex are bigger issues for the industry than brute strength. The combo does play in. but with the increased need for better ride quality across the industry, 31.8 is very much a viable standard and what most of my riders actually want out of a bar. This includes many...

1/20/2026 11:24pm If designed to the same max load, a 35 mm bar is approximately 10% stiffer. The required cross sectional area of the 35 mm bar is also smaller, so it would be lighter. Below is an example where the bar is evaluated as a basic cantilevered beam where the length is 400 mm and the load is 450 N. r1 and r2 correspond to the 35 mm bar and r3 and r4 correspond to the 31.8 mm bar.

1/20/2026 1:00pm Sad to hear, hope those affected get good compensation and find new work quickly. I guess the industry slump will continue through 2026. Potential new additional tariffs on goods going into the US won't help, if they materialise. I can't help but feel a little cynical about the noise around 32" wheels, seems like everyone is pinning their hopes on...
