Falcon Added a reply to Tuned Mass Dampers and Mountain Bikes

All the math involved is way over my head, but it sure seems like a lot of snake oil and extra weight for no reason. Maybe those who have ridden a bike with one can correct me... What's the problem we're trying to solve here? Are the units designed to tune out vibration, or to allow the tires to touch...

Falcon Added a reply to Warranty Experiences

I had a GREAT experience with Commencal and SRAM. I have a 2017 Meta V4.2 which came with Guide R brakes. After just over a year of ownership, the brakes developed that same sticky condition that they all did, wherein the levers did not return to full open after use and became sloppy. I called Commencal to ask if there...

I bit the bullet and will give my opinion on the Albert this weekend when I have time to ride… and if I receive it in time.

Those new Schwalbe radials look intriguing. I'm not sure how much is marketing and how much is actually "so revolutionary you'll want to go burn down the other tire companies' headquarters for being so conceited as to keep selling their crappy swill," though. I do remember when radial tires made a debut in Sportbike racing many years ago; everyone quickly...

Falcon Added a reply to Poll: Electric shifting vs mechanical shifting

7/31/2024 1:32pm
I don't hate electronic shifting, but I'm wondering what the actual benefits are. You save weight on a cable but add it back with a battery. You get precise shifting, but said battery could run out and leave you stuck in the wrong gear. You get an easier maintenance schedule (just charge it and go,) but it's more regularly-occurring. I'd...

Thanks to those who have chimed in and/or participated in the poll so far! What this comes down for me is something I can answer in a few simple questions. Does the technology improve the bike riding experience? If so, how much? With respect to electronic shifting, I don't see it. Its a nice to have, its sexy, it shifts well, but I don't find my on bike experience to be any better than a good mechanical system and its more expensive. I've had numerous rides when I had it where I had the battery crap out (or I left...

Falcon Added a reply to Tubeless help needed

Those tires must not be "tubeless ready." There are still some that aren't compatible with sealant. Someone else can probably chime in about whether the sealant will eventually clog those holes; I don't know.

The benefits of higher bars were discussed on this thread a while back, especially for taller riders. https://www.vitalmtb.com/forums/hub/general-cockpitcontact-point-discus… I'm only 6'0" but running 82mm riser bars on my enduro bike.

That's a great way to look at it. Thanks! I'll add that the power delivery matters a lot too, which Teamrobot alluded to as well. We humans cannot add a ton of torque effect into the equation, but a motorcycle can! I bet that has a lot to do with the body positioning on MX bikes.

It's about the ratio of system weight to rider weight that makes it so important in push bikes. A DH bike is about 16kg with a 80kg rider for a system weight of 96kg, so the CoG of the rider and small weight biases determine the entire balance of th system. Dirt bikes weigh minimum 100kg (for a 250, idk what a 450 weighs) with a 80kg rider, so the rider position matters a lot less. It's also why moto suspension is so much easier to setup and tune as there is less change is load

Well if you win a billion dollars you'd bring home about 600 million of it. I think some of you will have to win the lottery a couple times to buy a world class ski resort and build trails on it and also run a racing series and some world cup teams that money will go quicker than you could imagine. I think the honest answer for me is just buy some property in cool areas, buy some bikes, buy some more dirt bikes and have plenty of extras for my buddies to ride them and just enjoy life with...

Falcon Added a reply to Arm pump/hand pain solutions thread

5/31/2024 10:05am
This. MTB-only guys don't know the true meaning of "arm pump." I will say I've noticed a lot of low-slung brake levers on bicycles, though. Folks, you are doing yourself no favors with the brakes pointing toward the dirt. Imagine you're going to show off your forearms and want to make yourself look as much like Popeye as you can...
