Falcon Added a reply to how close are we to peak mountain bike??

8/11/2023 10:31am
We recently reached what appears to be the end of a major upheaval in bicycle design. Let's say the last 10 years or so was the time period. I don't want to say "this is it," but I doubt there will be a large-scale return to taller, shorter geo or much more expansion into lower, slacker geo from here. Components...

Falcon Added a reply to Do You Measure Fork Sag?

7/24/2023 4:19pm
I measure my fork sag using the o-ring, but I don't agonize about it. 30% or so, and we're good. I expect that percentage could change on a different bike, but on mine I'm happy at that sweet spot.

Falcon Added a reply to Dual rear caliper different pad size

If the swept area of your pads are different, it may affect the wear on your disc rotor and the pads in turn. You may also have to deal with heat issues from double the sliding friction. Just curiously, why are you going dual?

dolface Liked a reply to forum topic How often do you bring your bike in for a service

I do my own service (except for dampers) because it's fun, fast and cheaper than paying a shop. I also like being (mostly) self-sufficient so if/when something does break I'm not waiting a week for my LBS to fix it. I try to service my stuff before it breaks, which helps it last longer and perform better. I'm also super picky about my bike making noises and knowing how to service things means I can mess around until it's as quiet as I want it to be.

Falcon Added a reply to Catastrophic Full-Face Helmet Failure!

Who knows? Perhaps your helmet did its job and self-destructed to absorb the energy of the crash. You have a bloody lip and missing teeth instead of a broken jaw and facial reconstruction surgery. Heal up quick!

Can't see your pictures, but start with 30 PSI in the tires and an equivalent psi to your body weight in pounds in the shock. That will put you in the right ballpark. The bike should sag 30% into the travel or so with you aboard. Same with the forks.
I'm sure there are lots and lots of variables when we're talking about bicycle cranks. However, a longer lever with the same force applied to the end of it produces more torque, period. People have been failing to disprove that since Archimedes' time. Proper pedaling form, athletic output and foot placement preferences aside, even a slightly longer crank would produce...

dirty booger Liked a reply to forum topic Crank length/bb height . Is shorter/lower the future?

Track racers are still putting out 1800+ watts with 165mm cranks, where as before they were running 177mm cranks or longer. You aren't losing any power, that myth has been dispelled long ago. There is much more involved in producing power on a bike than just the length of the lever arm. I think the foot stance length is more interesting for descending. Gwin talks about going between 175mm -> 165mm on the DH bike based on how far apart he wants his feet.

I want longer cranks. I love the idea of a low BB, but you get more leverage on the chain with longer cranks, period. I can't afford to lose any pedal power, as I am a weakling. What would be really cool is some kind of telescoping crank that gets shorter at the bottom of the rotation so it clears...
I don't truly care in the case of e-bikes, but I don't like the idea that Shimano is intentionally disabling the motors if you try to modify them for more power. It's part of a disturbing trend that manufacturers everywhere are starting to adopt: one in which I don't actually own the thing I bought and paid for.

Crankbrothers Stamp 1 pedals are around $50. You'll get far fewer flats with tubeless than with tubes. The sealant fixes them as they occur and you barely even lose air pressure. I keep some extra on hand to top off every 6 months or so, and I also change it out when I swap tires.
What is so bad about adult entertainment that UCI cannot be assosiated with it (especially just by having a contestant having a website that has porn as a sponsor). Its not like porn is illegal or evil or is that how its seen in the US? Where I live it is very normal for adults to consume porn so i dont really get it. Its not like he is sponsored by a website promoting violence, drug abuse or terrorism etc. Seems very narrow minded and fundamentalistic to me.
