1. DH racing is not comparable to alpine ski racing b/c you can't get on course & stay on course as a spectator. That is a big advantage in drawing money to the resorts for a World Cup. 2. World Cup experiences success in the 60 man field b/c it does allow for a finale with either surprise gypsy times OR a guy like Gwin or Amaury (both outside protected) to get through to qualifying for finals with damaged equipment or wrecks. I think mtb on the whole is on the rise and will continue to be for a long time. But international dh racing is a very small part of it and just about everything eso is doing is hurting the very healthy place it grew to be when it was broadcast for free at a high level by redbull.

Funny. I almost started a very similar thread. Just so we are clear, I tried to distill Bruni's rant into one hypothesis. Please clean this up if I'm wrong... Hypothesis: If you cut the field to a more elite group you will be able to put on a better race with better TV qualities which will amount to higher dollar sponsors for those at the top. The point of semis was to suck. (Tinfoil hat on) ESO didn't want to do semis, they wanted to cut straight to 30 elite men from qualifying. They got negotiated into keeping 60 qualifying spots, but came up with semis as a half assed way to still end up at 30 riders in the final. ESO has no incentive to run semis well since they didn't want them anyway. Now next year they will make a statement about how they have heard the negative feedback about semis and are stopping them for 2024 and cut straight to 30 like they...

There's clearly two different ways to answer the question: guts and numbers. Choices made by feeling, preference, or guts are always going to be vague, personal, and more interesting to discuss. An Aussie might be more inclined to say Hill over a Brit, who might root for Peaty. But they'd both be wrong based on numbers, which are exact, precise, and unfeeling. It’s a shame there isn’t more value in what the 50:01 guys do. After downhill racing, the stuff they do is what i love watching the most. I gladly paid for their most recent video. Really wish there were more raw skate/bmx style MTB vids. MTB doesn’t have as much of a “core” audience as bmx and skate, so i get why the YT/influencer type stuff works, but would love to see a shift in content towards stuff like 50:01 vids, tea and biscuit vids, even the vital raw stuff is cooler to watch than most MTB content. Kona must be on another level of hurting. They have done nothing but just drop athletes over the years, made some real strange bike lineup choices and have fallen so flat and far behind on many things. Can you F'ing imagine going from the company that honestly changed it all with the OG process lineup to being so irrelevant at this time. Hate seeing it, loved that process lineup and the earlier carbon operators were sexy.... Maybe their new owners can help pull off a phoenix like move..
