1/29/2021 9:04am I have found with 11 and 12 speed chains that if I go past 0.5% elongation (~1/16" elongation over 12"), a new chain will not mesh well with the old cassette.

The two specs are likely to give Devinci flexibility depending on what they are able to source at a given time. The buyer will be lucky to have the choice.

1/5/2021 3:34pm Some of that is likely the wire bead on the Michelins vs the folding bead on the Maxxis DH tires. So I don’t think all of those extra grams transfer to additional sidewall support.

I haven’t ran them in cold weather, but the reports of the Magi-X hardening in the cold are concerning. My main complaint was the wear on the rear tire - the side knobs...

It's a step in the right direction, but is 5 mm per size enough? Let's say you thought the medium felt the most balanced in terms of front-center/rear-center ratio. If you wanted to maintain the FC/RC of 1.84 that the medium has, by my math, chainstay lengths should be 414, 431, 447 and 466 for S, M, L and XL, respectively.

There is certainly an element of psychology when it comes to self-rating ability level. I noticed that the offset toggle, as you said, has some pretty large differences in fork pressure, but more minor differences in rear shock settings. It could be a way of designing the app so that those who self-rate their skill level highly come out with useful settings. "Fork feels firm, but I'm an expert. I MUST be Offset 2."

I'm actually a bit confused by this. The bike setup app has a toggle for skill level and for forward and rearward offset. Am I wrong to think that the extent which you ride over the front of the bike and drive the front end is a component of skill level? Can you really be highly skilled and hanging off the back of the bike?

Love that Shimano are sticking with Micro Spline for the entry level group, instead of doing what SRAM did with the NX Eagle cassette (ditching XD driver and going with a reduced range cassette on the old Shimano style freehub driver). What this means is that there is an easy upgrade path available to people who buy lower specced bikes, where they can swap out the cassette to save some weight down the line without having to also get a new freehub driver or potentially even have to change out the whole wheel. Kudos to Shimano on this one!

This same argument is happening in reverse right now in the comments for the "Test Sessions: Five Slack, Short-Travel 29ers" review. Over there someone is complaining that the test bikes are so heavy, so why even bother buying a short travel bike? "If it's going to weigh the same as an enduro bike anyway..." blah blah blah. TRAVEL NUMBERS DICTATE MORE THAN JUST PEDALING EFFICIENCY AND BUMP ABSORPTION. Even if a long-travel bike is light and feels "efficient" pedaling up a gravel fire road, it's going to ride like shit on a flattish pumpy trail. Long travel bikes are built...

Another thought on OP's OP: The two biggest differences between drivetrain groupsets are materials and finishing. Fancy finishes don't make components stronger, but materials certainly do. There's a lot more metal and a lot less plastic in an expensive derailleur than a cheap one. Ditto for shifters. Similarly there are different grades of aluminum or steel used , fewer stamped parts and more forged or machined parts, more removable bolts instead of rivets and pins, etc. So while there isn't a big drop in performance going from XX1 to GX, there's a pretty big drop from GX to SX.

@teamrobot - dialed list except for hub engagement. if you're going from a bottom-of-the-line hub to something nicer, it's noticeable, if you have to pedal for speed or momentum. i'm not saying the upgrade has to be a $500 rear hub, but the difference between a super cheap rear hub found on a $1-$2k bike and a "good" rear hub with better engagement is legit. on budget rear hubs, i've had my foot blow off pedals (flat pedals, not clips) as i upshifted while pedaling on travsery portions of trail. the slack was just too great and the violent thud...
