How are you getting the indexing to work between the Shimano cassette and AXS derailleur? I had spacing issues when I ran an XX1-DH AXS derailleur with an 11-speed 9-32 cassette.

100% hand brakes, braking modulation is a key skill to learn as early as possible.... but you need to get hydro disc brakes with the lever adjusted really close to the handlebar.. I had a good experience with Shimano brakes for my 2 kids.
BTW, electronic shifting makes lots of sense for kids, most of the time cable shifting is really hard for small hands...

100% agree on the electric shifting having the benefit of not requiring much force to operate.  Tendon and arthritis issues are having me consider it myself.  The only concern was hand size using the levers…bike in question is V brake, so hydro would have to be old school Magura.

Mine started out on vbrakes and then cable brakes after that.  Its all good.  Hydros are nice but most cable brakes have some form of adjustment.  Dont over think it. 

But I also say hand brakes.  Front and back.  Get them dialed using their brakes from an early age!  Mine is 5 and some changes now and all ready can use his brakes better than a ton of adults.
