Yeah Sam never really had much of a reputation for anything other than being really ridiculously fast and being quite a nice guy. Where other riders get kind of pigeonholed for different aspects of their career e.g. Minnaar is known for his methodical approach and racecraft, Gwin for developing products for relatively niche brands, Peaty for his big personality. It is testament to how good Hill was in his prime that he was only ever known as being really fast on a bike and amazing to watch because of that.

That last sentence is 100% correct. A BMX/Freestyle/Skate comp would have an entry fee & a prize purse. That's all. 10-20 dudes fighting it out for 3 to 5 checks. If your competition is a BIG TIME draw like you say, then the organizer is going to pay 10 deep. But that's it. $1M/yr NZD is the equivalent of £475k GBP/yr. I've got a close friend who puts on similar scale music festivals and that wouldn't even cover infrastructure, policing costs (road closure/diversion costs), staff costs etc.

Some of you are missing the fact that the riders aren't asking their frame and parts sponsors to pay more. Just Red Bull, who make a mint off of these life threatening events.
