Ok, got a question. You got about 3k (can work with price a little bit) dropped in your lap and all you’ve ever wanted is a DH bike. What direction are you headed?
-Spesh is selling some of the dual crown status bikes for 3k. 3k!!!! They are not a true DH bike, but do have mavens, boxxer, etc.
-Buy the nicest DH bike you can find for 3k of pinkbike buy/sell?
-Buy a slightly older one (still in good shape) for quite a bit less and work with it? Tons of 27.5 glory’s out there for 2k-ish.
-Spend slightly more and buy a slightly more beat but much newer bike? Aluminum demo/newer session/???
Wait till end of season and buy a demo from a bike park? Obviously the frame will be beat but they usually tune them up halfway respectably at least.
Open to any and all thoughts. Yes I did ride a DH bike for the first time since 2018 and need one again bad.
Perusing the other site, plenty of second hand recent stuff about. That would be my choice, avoid the battered stuff though, even if its dripping in nice kit..
If you can catch one in stock, this is a really good deal for just a little over your budget.
That said, I picked up my barely used Supreme v4 for $1700 at the end of last season. Lots of good deals on used.
The rental bike angle isn't a bad option either. Angle Fire had Supreme V5's for just over that budget last year and I know Snowshoe has Session's for 2K.
My next downhill will be a either the TR11 frameset or a Vessel I'll build up from the parts I have. That'll probably happen WHEN my V4 frame cracks. 🤣
“Buy the nicest DH bike you can find for 3k of pinkbike buy/sell?”
My choice would be this
If I were getting back into DH I would get a 2nd hand bike that is somewhat popular and has a good track record. That way there is good support and spare parts availability. Are you racing or just hitting park laps? If you’re racing I would look for a V10, Glory, previous gen Demo, Slash or Supreme. If you’re just hitting park laps, I would get an aluminum bike with “simpler” suspension, like a Horst link. Maybe a Status, transition, YT or Commencal Clash.
That polygon is what I would buy at the 3500 price point if it were me. The build kit is pretty solid, that frame got pretty decent reviews in a few dh bike test groups. I would typically default to a new bike with the right no frills build kit over used if all else is equal. Fwiw, I think that 3,500 is typically the price point to get something decent that is economical in DH bike land. I find that in the 3k range, there is a whole host of bikes that I feel aren't as good as enduro/freeride bikes in the same price point. For example, I'd rather be on a 3k used 22-25 nomad 6 (there are other great options like a rocky slayer park edition, norco shore etc) over a 2016-2020 giant glory.
Rental bikes can be hit or miss... if you're patient and a really good wrench, then they can be a hit... but embrace the reality that a used bike is going to be $250 - $1,000 to get dialed depending on the previous owner.
Buy used, you'll get way better parts on a used bike than a new one for that price. I would avoid a one from a bike park, they can be used and abused, from any mechanic at a bike park I have known maintenance practices can be questionable.
I would stick with Alu over carbon as its just one less thing to think about loading onto the uplift etc.
Second hand always tempting but if going new, this is a great deal https://www.canyon.com/en-gb/mountain-bikes/enduro-bikes/torque/al/torque-dh-cllctv/3979.html?dwvar_3979_pv_rahmenfarbe=M113_P10 Torque DH CLLCTV. Under budget and probably all most people need at a bike park or local DH race.
Checking the price on this, it's also struck me how similar the silhouette is! https://www.specialized.com/gb/en/status-2-170-dh/p/221356?color=366760-221356
Currently in this situation, I've gone for used frame then spend a lot of time finding good deals on new parts (previous gen stuff, dead brands, OEM overstock...)
I like building bikes as much as riding them, so that probably helped my decision. Otherwise I would probably have gone used, some proper deals on barely ridden bikes out there
Id also vote polygon. Had a couple. Know some people with them. Solid bikes for the price point. Ive also never had a tues i didn’t like…
Strictly park laps. Not a racey boy. Definitely keen on a 4/faux bar bike, and definitely aluminum. Also furious/frs bikes are out there.
I’d be on that canyon like a pig on shit if they had a medium!
As for the status, definitely similar. If my local shop didn’t have my size in stock for 3k flat (no tax in Oregon) I might not even know they exist. But they look like a pretty slick bike for the price. Only thing is I rented a full 200mm DH bike last week and man it was a good time. Already have a 160 bike so I kinda just want to go for the full squish.
Damn, you along with a couple others brought up the polygon and I conoletely forgot they existed. Super tempting bike. Might be the ticket.
V4 cracking stories scare me too 🤣 I’d have a metal tr11 so hard but they are on the more scarce side for sure. There’s always a couple good ones in my size on the buy sell but they do go quick.
My son has the Polygon N8 and I've been pretty impressed with it. It rides well and the build quality is good. I would have no reservations about buying a Polygon. The DH7 is speced well. There's not much I would change at all (not to mention I'm a TRP fanboy and they come stock).
I've had 2 Tues over the years and still have them for the kids (and mainly its not worth selling a used bike in todays market). They ride good but compared to a "real" downhill bike they feel like a enduro bike. They can usually be found very cheap though allowing for some upgrades.
The new TR11 checks pretty much every box on my list other than external cable routing. I really like the bike and the geo seems on point. I'll wind up with one eventually but I really like the Supreme. It rides so good.
I'm planning a trip to whistler for next june, and looking at figuring out a park bike for while I'm there. I see cheap Norco Shore parks on PB frequently, anybody ever ridden one? I too would just buy another tues if I could find a good deal, the bike market is nuts.
Just rent one in Whistler, lots of shops have decent bikes around
Shores look like a sick bike for the price. I haven’t seen a ton of feedback on the DH version. I also just rode whitefish and a kid I rode with was on a shore and said it felt “dead” in the rear. He was also much better than me, so I took it with a grain of salt lol.
I actually just sold my Range, and I guessed it probably felt pretty dead in the rear, Norco high pivots are not exactly playful. Especially if you haven't ridden a high pivot bike before.
@Stewyeww if I rent a bike I have to include it in my trip budget lol. I have gotten along very well with V10's from evolution whistler the last couple times.
Dude you’re stoked!
If a Shore feels "dead in the rear" then it needs a shock service. High pivots feel great in the rough and jump fine. You will take more of a beating for a bike that jumps well.
USD is really strong in Canada at this time, so keep that in mind since $3000us will get you a 4,000+ Canadian bike. Price of renting has definitly gone up.
Buy used. Keep it local if you can. Keep an eye out for crash replacement frames. You can sometimes get a new never ridden frame if someone already has moved onto a new bike.
Main focus in used market should just be making sure the thing is in good condition.
save a little bit of budget for maintenance. Brake pads. A spare rear wheel. Spare tire. cushcore. Riding at the park puts your bike thru it.
Fair, you know the deal then
